    • A printer includes a paper holder which includes a shaft portion for supporting roll paper, and a movable member in a predetermined vertical height position near and above a first end portion of the shaft portion. The movable member is configured to be displaced along an extending direction of the shaft portion between a pressing position, in which the movable member is brought into contact with and pressed against an end surface of the roll paper supported by the shaft portion, and a non-pressing position, in which the movable member is not in contact with the end surface of the roll paper. The movable member is also biased toward the non-pressing position. A movable member detector is configured to detect that the movable member is in the non-pressing position, and a remaining amount notifier is configured to notify that a remaining amount of the roll paper is low.

    • An apparatus for measuring the thickness of a roll winding on or unwinding from a core during winding or unwinding of a web, comprises a first detector having a beam projector and a beam receiver which are arranged along the core at opposite ends of the roll for detecting a predetermined thickness of the roll with a rough accuracy. A second detector having a beam projector and a linear array sensor is provided, for detecting the roll thickness with high accuracy. When the first detector detects a predetermined thickness of the roll, the second detector, which is supported on an arm carrying a positioning roller, is placed in operative position by pressing the positioning roller against the core and detects the thickness of the roll according to the position on the linear array sensor of the beam reflected from the surface of the roll.

    • An automatic web splice control system determines when an expiring roll of web of indeterminate caliper reaches a preselected splice radius by sensing when the web roll has diminished to preset first and second radii and measuring the web length resulting from that diminishment to determine web caliper. Then the system computes the roll cross-sectional area between the second radius and the preselected splice radius divided by that caliper to determine in advance the web length that will be drawn from a roll as the roll size diminishes from the second radius to the splice radius. Commencing at the second radius, the system then measures the amount of web drawn from the roll and when that amount equals the precomputed web length, the system generates a splice signal indicating that the roll has diminished to the preselected splice radius.
