    • Disclosed herein is a self-locking apparatus for releasably holding individual masts together and a method of making the connector and mast assemblies. The apparatus provides first and second elongate individual mast members with the first mast having a hollow end for telescopic engagement with a protruding reduced dimension end on the second mast. A releasable co-operating pin and slot engagement is provided between the hollow end, and the reduced end with the first and second members movable between first and second positions relative to one another. The first position allows the hollow end and the reduced end to be moved into and out of telescopic engagement with one another while the second position holds the ends non-movable in relation to one another. A pair of co-operating collars on one of said ends, in co-operation with the pin and slot engagement, holds the masts in the second position in locked relation to one another. Co-operating locking elements between the pair of collars provides for a self locking effect between the collars that precludes the masts from becoming disassembled through regular use of the mast assembly. The method of manufacture provides for initially making the individual ends having the claimed locking arrangement and then fastening them to the ends of already existing masts.
