    • A workpiece has at least one exterior surface with an initial average surface roughness (Ir). The profile of the exterior surface is derived by conventional manufacturing processes, some of which leave the exterior surface with irregularities having directional orientation. The workpiece is subjected to a controlled vibratory finishing process such that the exterior surface has a desired average surface roughness (Ar) after exposure to the finishing process for a predetermine period of time (T.sub.opt). This predetermined period of time is based upon the initial average surface roughness (Ir), the desired average surface roughness (Ar) and a minimum average surface roughness obtainable through the vibratory finishing process (Dr).

    • A roller bearing has working surfaces, that is surfaces where its rollers and races contact each other, which have extremely shallow irregularities that are nondirectional and thus render the working surfaces isotropic. Moreover, the isotropic surfaces have very low average asperity slopes and likewise a very low plasticity indexes. To derive the high quality working surfaces, the races and rollers are first ground or otherwise mechanically machined to provide the working surfaces with the proper profiles. Then the races and rollers are immersed in a liquid chemical which reacts with the metal at the surfaces and contemporaneously forms a protective coating which inhibits further reaction. Abrading elements within the chemical come against the races and rollers as they are agitated and continuously remove the coating from higher elevations of the working surfaces, so that the chemical continues to react with the metal at those higher elevations. The irregularities diminish to very shallow pits of no particular orientation, thus leaving the working surfaces isotropic. Thereafter, in the absence of the chemical, the protective coating is removed, exposing the high quality working surface. The bearing requires no run in, that is to say, after the initial loading its torque and temperature remain steady at low magnitudes. Moreover, the isotropic surface imparts greater fatigue life.

    • This invention relates to a vibrating abrasive cleaning apparatus and method which is powered by a hydraulic drive motor mounted to a square tubing frame which is housed within an enclosure that is vibrated by an eccentric shaft assembly directly coupled to the hydraulic drive motor and square tubing frame. The container assembly is mounted on the rigid square tubing frame, on one side by compression springs, on the opposite side by tension springs. The compression springs and tension springs have a different spring rate which produces better rolling of the media and therefore, faster parts circulation and cleaning. To further give flexibility to the cleaning process the hydraulic power supply is equipped with the variable volume piston pump to give infinite speed settings. The eccentric shaft assembly with the eccentric weight positions set at different relative positions to one another gives the operator the ability to adjust the machine to produce optimum results with all parts, sizes, and weights. The entire vibration assembly sits on a base and has a lid operated by a cable and counterweight for ease in loading the container for oscillation of the parts. Further, the vibrating abrasive cleaning apparatus and method provides a unique interchangeable drainage assembly for recirculation of and filtering of the cleaning solvent used in the cleaning process.

    • An improved reversing weight assembly for a vibratory bowl finishing machine including a dampening housing attached to the upper end of drive shaft for the machine. The housing is filled with dampening material such as a viscous fluid and includes a freely rotatable dampening vane inside the housing. The vane is connectable to an upper eccentric weight which is rotatable in correspondence with rotation of the dampeing vane. Stop pins are adjustably positionable along the housing in association with the eccentric weight to limit its range of movement. Stop pins are positioned to determine the trailing angle for the top weight versus the bottom weight. Upon rotation of the drive shaft, the housing will correspondingly rotate, with the result being that the trailing stop pin will move into abutment with the top weight. The dampening vane, connected to the top weight, must be moved within the viscous fluid, thus dampening the force with which the top weight comes into abutment with the stop pins. Upon reversal, the weight will move to the opposite stop pins, but will be dampened by the viscous fluid.
