    • A process for the manufacture of suture needles and, more particularly, a process for enhancing the physical strength of the suture needles through an expedient cold-working or cold-forming procedure. Also disclosed is the provision of a novel and physically strengthened suture needle, particularly a surgical suture needle possessing a curvilinear configuration wherein the cross-sectional configuration of the needle is cold-formed into varying shapes in order to produce a needle having superior physical characteristics and strengths imparted thereto through the inventive process. The needles are essentially cold formed, and which process includes the aspect of imparting to straight metal rods which are preferably constituted from stainless steel, manufacturing steps which include sharpening one end of rod severed segments so as to form the needle tip, thereafter curving the needle with the metal still being in a relatively ductile state, and subjecting the needle to a cold forming process, such as through the intermediary of pressure die molds or stamping, to produce varying cross-sectional shapes along the length of the needle.

    • A method for producing the latch bearing in a latch needle for textile machines of the type in which a latch is pivotably mounted in a longitudinal slot between two cheeks of a needle shank by a hinge pin passing through mutually aligned transversely extending bores in at least one of the cheeks and a bearing portion of the latch between the cheeks. In accordance with the method a cylindrical wire is provided with transversely extending notches at intervals corresponding to the length of a hinge pin. The notched wire is converted by hot or cold treatment into a bittle, hard state. Individual hinge pins are broken off from the wire at the notches, and are subsequently inserted into the bores in the cheeks and the bearing portion of the latch to be securely fixed there.

    • Elongate grooves are provided along both or one side of the shank of a knitting needle. The elongate groove is parallel with the back edge and is positioned between the back and front edges of the shank of the needle. The elongate grooves reduce the weight of the needle without substantially reducing the vertical rigidity of the shank of the needle and function to reduce the transmission of impact shock from the needle butt to the hook. The grooves also provide a passageway extending longitudinally along the needle shank to provide for improved retention and distribution of lubricant along the needle shank.
