    • An example method includes setting up a secure channel between a blade and a provisioning server in a network environment, downloading an image of a virtual machine monitor (VMM) from the provisioning server to the blade through the secure channel, and booting the image to instantiate the VMM on the blade. The blade and the provisioning server are mutually authenticated and authorized with a plurality of parameters. Booting the image may include loading the image on a memory element of the blade and transferring control to the image. In some embodiments, booting the image includes modifying a root file system of the image by adding the daemon such that an agent is included in the root file system. The agent can download another image corresponding to an operating system of a virtual machine.

    • A system and method for a symmetric switching fabric includes a first switching tier that includes a plurality of leaf switches, a second switching tier that includes one or more spine switches, and a plurality of interlinks for coupling the leaf switches to the spine switches. Each of the leaf switches includes one or more first ports configured to couple each of the leaf switches to other network devices outside the switching fabric and one or more second ports for coupling each of the leaf switches to each of the spine switches. A ratio of a number of first ports and a number of second ports is selected based on an oversubscription ratio. For each pair of a first switch selected from the leaf switches and a second switch selected from the spine switches, a same number of first interlinks selected from the plurality of interlinks couple the first switch to the second switch.

    • A network device, is to be deployed in a network between a first network domain and a second network domain, and is to be configured for fast reroute. The network device includes a first traffic forwarder control module, corresponding to the first network domain, which is to determine a primary next hop in the first network domain. The control plane includes a second traffic forwarder control module, corresponding to the second network domain, which is to determine a backup next hop in the second network domain. The backup next hop is to be used as a fast reroute for the primary next hop in response to a failure associated with the primary next hop. The control plane includes a controller module, in communication with the first and second traffic forwarder control modules, which is to configure a forwarding structure of the forwarding plane with the primary and backup next hops.

    • Methods, systems, and computer programs are presented for managing a switching layer fabric. A network device operating system (ndOS) program includes program instructions for exchanging switching policy regarding a switching of network packets in a plurality of ndOS switching devices having respective ndOS programs executing therein. The first ndOS program is executed in a first ndOS switching device, and the switching policy is exchanged with other ndOS programs via multicast messages. Further, the ndOS program includes program instructions for exchanging resource control messages with the other ndOS switching devices to implement service level agreements in the switching layer fabric, where the ndOS switching devices cooperate to enforce the service level agreements. Further yet, the ndOS program includes program instructions for receiving changes to the switching policy, and program instructions for propagating the received changes to the switching policy via message exchange between the ndOS programs. The ndOS switching devices are managed as a single logical switch that spans the plurality of ndOS switching devices.
