摘要： A method and apparatus for controlling gain of an optical fiber amplifier includes a plurality of optical isolators, an excitation light source, a wavelength division optical fiber coupler, and a special optical fiber. At least one of the optical isolators is disposed at both input and output ports of the optical fiber amplifier so that an input signal light can propagate in one direction. The wavelength division optical fiber coupler couples excitation light from the excitation light source to the input signal light or separates one of the excitation light and the input signal light from the other.

摘要： An Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is placed in a laser cavity to clamp the gain of the amplifier. The laser cavity is preferably formed to minimize the effects of relaxation oscillations and of spectral hole burning. In a preferred embodiment, the laser cavity supports a lasing wavelength which makes the saturation energy at the laser wavelength less than that at the signal wavelengths. In an erbium doped fiber implementation, the laser wavelength is shorter than that of the signal wavelengths and is separated from them by no more than approximately 75% of the width of the spectral hole. The compounding of relaxation oscillations may be substantially eliminated by varying the length of the fiber within each laser cavity within a system to change the photon round-trip time within each cavity.

摘要： An apparatus and method for flattening the gain of an optical fiber amplifier (18) doped with an ion such as erbium and which is pumped by a pump laser (20). Optical couplers (32, 34) inserted before and after the fiber amplifier couple the main optical path to an optical ring passing through the fiber amplifier so as to form a ring laser. An optical isolator (32) placed in the ring causes the lasing light to only counterpropagate relative to the optical signal being amplified. When the fiber amplifier primarily exhibits inhomogeneous broadening and the ring lases, the lasing light clamps the gain to a value determined by the loop loss, and the value of the clamped gain is relatively uniform across a wide bandwidth.

摘要： The gain of an optical amplifier is maintained constant by employing a portion of the amplified optical signal in a feedback loop. In one arrangement this is used to control the output of a pump signal source accordingly. The portion of the said signal corresponds to spontaneous emission (ASE) at a control wavelength or band of wavelengths different to the wavelength of the optical signal output. In the case of an erbium, for example, optical fibre amplifier the portion is preferably ASE at 980 nm, the amplified signal being at 1.535 .mu.m, i.e. completely different transitions in the amplifying medium are used for gain and ASE feedback in order to lessen requirements on the filter used to extract the portion for the feedback loop.

摘要： A fiber-MOPA includes a seed-pulse source followed by fiber amplifier stages. The seed pulse source delivers signal pulses for performing a laser operation and delivers radiation between the seed pulses to maintain the collective average of the seed pulse power and intermediate radiation power constant. Keeping this average power constant keeps the instantaneous available gain of the fiber amplifier stages constant. This provides that the seed pulse delivery can be changed from one regime to a next without a period of instability between the regimes.
