    • An internal combustion engine of the valve-in-head type having a low profile cylinder head which requires minimal headroom in the engine compartment of an automotive vehicle. The cylinder head has a rectilinear configuration with the valve trains disposed on horizontal axes extending transversely of the cylinder head. Each valve train in the cylinder head is provided with precise axial support at both ends of the train. The engine has a relatively thin upstanding combustion chamber over each cylinder and one or more pairs of poppet valves per cylinder each having a sealing surface adjacent its outer edge for engagement with respective seats defined by axially aligned header tubes. Each valve has a relatively short neck extending through the combustion chamber during the intake and compression strokes and when the fuel-air mixture is fired. The valve spring of each valve train is situated between a fixed abutment attached to the side wall of the cylinder head and the end of the valve cage remote from the poppet valves.

    • The exhaust valve has a valve member which opens away from the combustion chamber of the engine cylinder and which is biased for opening by the gas pressure prevailing in the combustion chamber. The valve is kept closed by an opposed hydraulic pressure which in a holding chamber acts on a holding piston secured to the spindle of the valve member. When the valve is to be opened, the pressure in the holding chamber is relieved and one or more valve controlled flow passages are opened, through which hydraulic liquid flows from the holding chamber to a reservoir defined by a further piston secured to the valve spindle. The two pistons are preferably of substantially equal size. When the exhaust valve is to be closed a hydraulic pressure is applied to a substantially smaller closing piston which is also secured to the valve spindle. During the closing movement hydraulic liquid flows from the reservoir back to the holding chamber and after the closing movement that chamber is again connected to the hydraulic pressure which ensures that the valve member is maintained in its closed position against the gas pressure.

    • Valve actuation systems are disclosed herein that allow valve opening timing to be varied using a cam phaser and that allow valve closing timing to be varied using a lost-motion system. In one embodiment, an actuation system is provided that has a locked configuration in which a bearing element is held in place between a cam and a rocker to transmit cam motion to an engine valve. The actuation system also has an unlocked configuration in which the bearing element is permitted to be at least partially ejected from between the cam and rocker, such that cam motion is not transmitted to the engine valve. The actuation system is switched to the unlocked configuration by draining fluid therefrom through a main valve which is piloted by a trigger valve. The actuation system also includes integrated autolash and seating control functionality.
