    • A tool pick assembly and a tool and block assembly are disclosed. A sleeve is positioned about the shank to allow rotation of the tool pick and also friction fit with the block. The sleeve is stepped in complement to the shape of the surface of the shank of the tool pick and the shape of the surface of the bore in the tool holder and extends substantially all of the length, optionally all of the length, of the stepped bore in the block to reduce or prevent dust and fines from entering and wearing the bore surface. When assembled, the stepped sleeve and complementarily shaped shank of the tool pick each do not extend past the rear surface of the bore to mitigate or prevent shank deformation from impact during use.

    • A tool pick assembly is provided for insertion in a first bore having a first diameter. The tool pick assembly includes a tool pick having a shank with a diameter sized for receipt in a second bore having a second diameter, the second diameter being smaller than the first diameter, an adaptive sleeve retainer having a thickness for stably supporting the shank of the tool pick in the first bore, and a washer for compressing the adaptive sleeve retainer to aid insertion into the first bore. The adaptive sleeve retainer is configured to spring radially outward to retain the tool pick in the first bore. A push out force for pushing the tool pick out from the first bore is approximately ±10% of a push out force for pushing out from the first bore a tool pick having a shank with a diameter sized for receipt in the first bore.

    • The present invention provides a rotary cutting bit for use in road milling, mining and/or excavating applications that includes a split wear ring which is harder than the steel cutting bit body. The cutting bit has a cutting tip made of hard material such as tungsten carbide brazed into a nose portion of the steel tool body. The split wear ring is positioned in an annular channel in the tool body near the steel nose of the tool body. In one embodiment, the split wear ring is positioned so that the inner diameter of the split wear ring is smaller than the outer diameter of the cutting tip. Such a configuration allows the split wear ring to be tucked under the outer diameter of the cutting tip, decreasing tool body wear that could otherwise occur, thus providing longer tool life and reduced operating costs. The split wear ring pieces may be retained in place by a retainer such as banding rings, epoxies, tape or wire. Such retainers hold the ring sections in place during the assembly operation, so the ring sections do not move and remain attached to the tool body.
