    • A camera film easy loading takeup spool includes a body member rotatable about a longitudinal axis past a film delivery position and a plurality of peripherally spaced pairs of longitudinal jaw members, one of each of which is swingable about a longitudinal axis between film entry opening open and closed positions relative to the respective other jaw member and spring biased to its open position and including a depending follower engaging a circular cam which closes the jaws offset from the film delivery position and permits the spring opening of the jaw proximate the film delivery position. A film perforation engaging tooth or a friction pad is carried by one of each pair of jaws and the inner ends of the jaws delineate an inner passageway of a width equal to about the film thickness. A visual indicator is actuated when any one of the jaw members is open.

    • A method and combination for eliminating slack in one or more of a plurality of strands of web material being wound into coils on a take-up drum, where the strands have different thicknesses, include connecting a portion of each strand to the drum so that rotation of the drum will cause the strands simultaneously to wind onto the drum. The strands are wound onto the drum and a portion of each strand is connected to a previously wound portion of the same strand for forming a plurality of fixed diameter loops about the drum, the portion of each strand adjacent to the drum substantially conforming in size and shape to the outer surface of the drum. The portion of each strand connected to the drum is disconnected and the outer diameter of the drum is reduced an amount sufficient to cause the loops to slip relative to the drum when the drum is rotated and a predetermined tension is reached in the strands, the frictional force between the strands and drum causing the loops to rotate with the drum until said predetermined tension is reached.

    • A winding apparatus for webs of photosensitive material has a core provided with a transverse slot and rotatably mounted on a fixed shaft in the housing of a cassette. The cassette contains a pivotable guide whose discharge end can register with the inlet of the slot in a predetermined angular position of the core so as to feed the leader of a web into the slot. The core is surrounded by a removable sleeve which can be slid onto the core only when the latter assumes the predetermined angular position and when an opening of the sleeve registers with the inlet of the slot. When the leader extends into the slot, the core is rotated by a worm drive so that the web is convoluted onto the sleeve and can be removed with the sleeve for transfer to another processing station. The housing of the cassette has a removable cover which can be attached to the shaft for the core only when the core is properly oriented relative to the guide and when the sleeve is properly applied onto the core.

    • Automatic taking-up of a long member is enabled to reduce man-hour etc., needed for take-up operation to improve the productivity in the production of the long member. A take-up device (1) for a long member (50) includes a take-up reel (10), rotation driving means that rotates the take-up reel (10), guide means (20) that guides the long member (50), and a control unit (30) that performs control of the entire device. An insertion portion (13) into which the end portion of the long member (50) can be inserted is formed in the core member (11) of the take-up reel (10). Rotation of the take-up reel (10) is controlled by the control unit (30) to set the opening of the insertion portion (13) at a predetermined position. The end portion of the long member (50) is guided toward that position by the guide means (20), and the end portion is inserted through the insertion portion (13). Then, the take-up reel (10) is rotated to take up the long member (50) on the core member (11).

    • There is provided a tape spool retention system having a spool and tape retainer molded of a single plastic part. Assembly of the end of a piece of flat tape is accomplished by inserting the tape into under a pin, molded between the flanges of the spool, and then forcing the pin into an underlying cavity in the core of the spool, thereby wrapping the tape about the pin. The slight interference fit between the pin and the opening of the cavity keeps the assembly together, and when one or two wraps of tape are wound onto the spool, the tape retention is very good. The present invention provides a machine configured to make this assembly operation easy for an unskilled worker to perform reliably. The machine provides a nest for holding the spool. After tape is inserted into the spool, partial operation of the machine's operating lever captures the tape so that is does not move during assembly. Further operation of the operating lever breaks free the pin and forces it into the cavity.
