    • A seatbelt retractor is operably coupled to a belt dereeling retarder mechanism which utilizes a magnetorheological fluid and a coil for imposing a magnetic field on the fluid to selectively change the fluid properties and a braking or retarding effect imposed on the belt retractor during dereeling or payout of the belt. The retarder may include a piston coupled to a rotatable shaft coupled to the belt retractor reel and displacing fluid through the magnetic field in response to actuation of the belt. Alternate embodiments include a multiple disc brake coupled to the retractor reel through a gear drive speed increaser or a cylindrical housing and core member defining an annular space occupied by the magnetorheological fluid and connected to the belt retractor reel through a speed increasing gear drive.

    • A safety device for a vehicle, which provides a more simple optimized mechanism to function as a load limiter having stable operation characteristics, and allows a reference load for releasing the webbing to vary depending on a change in collision speed, thereby providing increased protection to an occupant. More specifically, the safety device includes a roller, an electric generator, a magnetic force generator and a resistance generator. The roller comes in contact with a webbing and is configured to rotate with movement of the webbing. The electric generator generates electric current via the rotation of the roller, and the magnetic force generator generates a magnetic force via the electric current generated by the electric generator. The resistance force generator provides a resistance force to the rotation of the roller based on a shear force altered by the magnetic force generated by the magnetic force generator.

    • The seat belt module is electronically controlled using magneto-rheological fluid. A CPU delivers a signal to an electromagnetic coil within the module at the beginning of a crash to cause the viscosity of the magneto-rheological fluid to increase sufficient to lock the spool on which the seat belt is wound against rotation. Thereafter, a subsequent signal is delivered by the CPU to the coil to reduce the magnetic field and the viscosity of the magneto-rheological fluid allowing the spool to be unwound in a programmed manner so as to reduce the forces imposed on an occupant by the seat belt. The CPU may be pre-programmed in response to signals from sensors throughout the vehicle that deliver signals corresponding to the characteristics of the occupant and may be programmed in response to signals from these sensors and from an air bag to respond in real time.
