    • A system for automatically arranging a stored sequence ot textural character codes and control codes to provide textual line lengths within a predetermined range. If a tab code is detected within the stored sequence, the amount of line length corresponding to the tab code is calculated by the control logic, since the tab code, itself, includes no indication of the amount of line length for execution of the tab code. The number of character codes and space codes on a line containing a tab code is reduced to accommodate the line length required to execute the tab code upon print-out by a printer. In forming a group of codes corresponding to a line, a hyphenation decision may be necessary when inclusion of a word at the end of a line would result in too great a line length, while exclusion of the word would result in too short a line length. When hyphenation decisions are to be made during automatic adjustment of the stored code sequence, only the word involved in the hyphenation decision is printed for operator viewing. The number of the line on which the decision must be made is also printed, since this may influence the hyphenation decision. Further, another indication is included with the print-out if the word involved in the hyphenation decision is the last word of a paragraph. No other printing is performed during this automatic margin adjusting operation and, thus, the printer functions only as an operator readable output device when hyphenation decisions are required. The time required to adjust the margins of a page of text in this manner can, therefore, be extremely short in comparison to the time required when printing is included in the adjust operation, because the operation disclosed herein is not limited by the speed of the printer.

    • Apparatus for automatic hyphenation of input words from a word processing system. The apparatus includes a digital reference matrix memory containing a vector representation of all legal hyphenations for each dictionary word in the form of a calculated magnitude and associated unique vector angles. The vector magnitude constitutes the address data for accessing the memory. When an input word is received for hyphenation, a hyphen is added to the word and its magnitude is calculated. The memory is accessed for an address which equals the calculated magnitude. If the address is not found, a signal is generated indicating that the word cannot be legally hyphenated. If the address is found, then the corresponding angles, representing legal hyphenations of the input word, are compared with test words generated by sequentially inserting hyphens in the input word. All equal compares are flagged and the corresponding hyphenated input words are gated onto the output line.

    • A method and system particularly adapted for use by phototypesetting machines for adjusting the length of a line of copy to fit a line length allotted for such copy by changing inter-character spacing of the words in the copy. This fine control of copy line length is provided by changing intercharacter spacing of the words of the copy when a coarse control has been provided by the approximate harmony of the point size of the characters to be used, the allotted line length, and the line length of the copy. Initially, the length of the line of copy is determined with normal inter-character and inter-word spacing without setting the copy. Then the difference between this length and the allotted line length is converted into the amount of linear distance which is to be added to each character or to be subtracted from each character space in the line of copy. The line of copy is then set on a photosensitive medium by the phototypesetter with constant predetermined linear distance subtracted or added to each character space of the line of copy so as to precisely adjust the length of the copy line to fit the allotted line length. A particular font arrangement is utilized in the system to generate data related to the linear space allotted for each character in the line of copy.

    • A system for justifying an output line where the total number of required data codes for computing a justification solution exceeds the buffer storage provided for the output line. Given a storage capacity of n data codes, when n-1 data codes have been read, counted, and stored, and a sufficient number of codes have not been stored for computing a justification solution based on the sum of the escapement values, a signaling data code is generated and stored. Then output from the buffer is initiated and continues until a space code is read. Thereafter, additional data codes are read and stored in the buffer and the above operation is repeated until a sufficient number of data codes have been read to compute a justification solution for remainder of the output line.

    • A system which accepts an input medium and provides an output copy having a right hand edge which is controlled by means of a variable control zone. The control zone may be made 1) relatively wide with a resultant extremely ragged right hand edge; 2) quite narrow with a resultant slightly ragged right hand edge; or 3) equal to a value of one escapement unit with a resultant even right hand edge. The system is operable such that in the event that more than one word space occurs in the zone, the word space nearest to the right hand side of the zone which corresponds to the end of the measure is chosen. No operator intervention is necessary to achieve the desired result after the system has been started.
