    • A covering for a containment pool, tank or enclosure, in particular a containment enclosure for a nuclear power plant, is produced by placing metal sheets parallel to a first wall at a predetermined distance from the latter, each sheet comprising anchoring elements, on a first face arranged facing the first wall, placing a rail situated between the anchoring elements and comprising side walls and a base delineating a space facing the area to be welded with two adjacent sheets, making a weld bead by full-penetration butt welding of the adjacent metal sheets, and pouring concrete between said first wall and the metal sheets, the anchoring elements of the metal sheets being completely independent from the weld bead after the concrete has been poured.

    • An apparatus, system and related method are disclosed for performing trackless movement and full penetration welding along a weld line, irrespective length and configuration of a butt joint. A pre-existing gap of the weld line is used to act a guide slot and a guide wheel unit to track the gap is designed to perform trackless movement using an electric or manual winch as a driver. In the automatic arc welding systems, the guide slot and the guide wheel unit can save an external track and a seam-tracking device. A movable weld backing is held against the underside of the weld line to support liquid metal and control backside bead to achieve full-penetration welding of a butt weld. The movable weld backing and a welder are arranged the underside and the topside of base metals to be welded, respectively, using a connector member through the pre-existing gap of the weld line. According to the apparatus, flux-cored wire plasma arc can perform full penetration welding. A layer of liquid slag between the moveable backing and the liquid metal of the underside weld pool can act as a lubricant to increase the sliding ability of the moveable backing, act as a heat insulator to protect the backing from the high temperature of plasma arc, and provide a shielding film for the weld pool.

    • A flux backup unit applies a continuous flow of granular flux to the underside of a joint as a weld is made at that joint. The backup unit includes a hopper, an open top container within the hopper, and a feed screw for lifting the flux from the bottom of the hopper to the container. The continuous flow of flux into the container causes the container to remain full as the joint is moved relative to it so that the joint is continuously backed with flux. The excess flux introduced into the container overflows into the hopper and is thereby automatically recirculated through the container by the feed screw.

    • The present disclosure is directed to methods for damming and backing welds. In one embodiment, a method of welding a workpiece is provided in which the workpiece includes a first section, a second section, and a weld groove disposed therebetween. Opposing edges of the first and second sections are positioned adjacent to each other and at least partially form a bottom of the weld groove. A silicon dioxide weld dam is abutted against a terminal end of the workpiece relative to a weld direction. The weld dam is positioned at a weld joint termination point to prevent molten metal from flowing through a terminal end opening of the groove at the weld joint termination point. The first and second sections are welded together along opposing edges in the weld direction up to the weld joint termination point. Finally, the dam is removed, exposing the terminal end of the workpiece.
