    • Kits provide management of implantable lead extensions being implanted by providing a kit body with features that retain the extension in a configuration, with amounts being removed as needed during the implantation procedure. The kit can be present within a sterile field, and the kit body features may be arranged so that a length of a path that the extension forms is approximately equal to a length of the extension needed for the tunnel. The kit body may include features that allow the connectors of the extension as well as implantation tools to be retained within the kit body while being easily accessed when needed during the procedure. The kit may be coupled to the patient during the trial period, as the extension may have an implanted distal connector while having a proximal connector coupled to an external stimulator and while being retained on the kit body.

    • An electrode pad packaging system including an electrode pouch, an electrode pad (e.g., a defibrillation electrode pad), a wire and a shell is disclosed. The electrode pad is disposed at least partially within the electrode pouch. The wire extends from the electrode pad and, in a disclosed embodiment, at least a portion of the wire is attached to the shell. The shell is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the electrode pouch (e.g., the shell is secured to a portion of the electrode pouch). The shell includes a valve thereon that is configured to allow air to exit the electrode pouch. The valve may be configured to prevent air from entering the electrode pouch. A method of packaging an electrode pad is also disclosed. The method includes providing an electrode pouch, an electrode pad, a wire and a shell. A valve on the shell allows air to exit the electrode pouch.

    • Designs for an implantable lead are disclosed. In one embodiment, the lead includes at least one conductive pathway and a protective element surrounding at least a portion of the at least one conductive pathway. A stiffness of the protective element varies along a length of the protective element. The stiffness may be varied by varying a material composition of the protective element. Alternately, the protective element may be one or two helically-wound wires, and the stiffness may be varied by varying a pitch of one or both helically-wound wires. Alternately, the protective element may be a perforated tube and the stiffness may be varied by varying a ratio of openings to tube in the perforated tube. Alternately, the protective element may be a patterned mesh and the stiffness may be varied by varying a pattern of the patterned mesh. The implantable lead may be used in a cochlear implant.
