    • An indicating apparatus and system for multi-bay carousel bagging-rack assemblies utilized in retail and grocery stores, wherein the indicating apparatus comprises illumination means, audible means, tactile means, and/or combinations thereof, and having assigned indication means for each separate bagging-bay provided by the bagging-rack assembly. The indicating apparatus may be manually or automatically activated and deactivated according to the position or location of purchased items placed into bags housed in the bagging-bays, communicating to the patron and/or cashier that purchased items are ready for transfer from the point-of-sale assembly to the patron's cart.     • A method of generating a complex laser scanning pattern from a bioptical laser scanning system for providing 360° of omnidirectional bar code symbol scanning coverage at a point of sale station that employs a plurality of laser scanning stations about a two independently controlled rotating polygonal mirrors.     • A convertible self-checkout system includes a base and a stand rotatably mounted to the base. The stand includes an input/output device facing in a first direction and a product scanner, and the stand is positionable relative to the base in at least a first angular position and a second angular position. The input/output device is an interactive video display, and the interactive video display has a first mode corresponding to the first angular position and a second mode corresponding to the second angular position. A sensor determines an angular position of the stand relative to the base and communicates the angular position to the interactive video display. The stand further includes a video display facing in a second direction substantially opposite from the first direction.

    • A self-calibrating photoelectric control system for use in a checkstand to control the starting and stopping of a conveyer belt utilized to move products closer to a checkout clerk. The self-calibrating photoelectric control system including a light source for emitting a light beam having an intensity, a photoelectric sensor for receiving light from the light source and for generating an output signal when the received light is equal to or greater than a light-state threshold of the photoelectric sensor; and a calibration circuit for automatically calibrating the sensitivity of the photoelectric control system to partial beam breaks after occurrence of any one of a plurality of predefined events. The calibration circuit is operative for performing a calibration process which adjusts the intensity of the light beam emitted by the light source such that the intensity is slightly greater than the light-state threshold of the photoelectric sensor. By repeatedly performing the calibration process at selected times, the present invention optimizes the detection of objects that partially block the light beam, and thereby greatly enhances the system's ability to detect translucent and low-profile products.
