    • Sulfur dioxide is scrubbed from stack gases in an absorption device by a sodium-based aqueous scrubbing solution, a portion of which is subsequently and continuously regenerated outside the absorption apparatus by a causticizing reaction with slaked lime. The causticized solution is routed through a settling device wherefrom a portion of the aqueous sediment is returned to the causticizing zone to provide seed crystals which encourage the formation of larger sized solid particles; also, a portion of the aqueous sediment from the settling device is continuously mechanically dewatered and then removed from the system. The liquid effluent solution from the settling device is passed to a solids-contacting and reaction device for mixing with sodium carbonate in order to reduce the calcium ion concentration and the solids content of the solution. The underflow of the solidscontacting device is conveyed back to the causticizing zone and the clarified overflow, i.e., the regenerated scrubbing liquor, is conveyed to the absorption apparatus.

    • Two disc-shaped body sections are mounted facing one another for rotation about a generally centrally disposed shaft with a flat seal member interposed between the sections. Means are provided to selectively rotate the upper body section through a preselected angle about the shaft. A liquid flow channel is formed through the lower body section in communication with a bore for a sample-taking piston which is located in the upper body section. Drive means are arranged to reciprocate the piston to withdraw a liquid sample from the flow channel. After the sample is drawn, the upper body section is rotated and the sampling piston is driven downward to release the sample into a pyrolysis tube or the like.

    • An electrolytic cell is formed with a housing enclosing a flatfaced cathode and anode in closely spaced face-to-face relationship. The cathode comprises a plurality of small diameter cathode elements held in spaced-apart relationship by an insulating matrix. Each of the elements terminates in a small diameter tip. Metal deposits on the tips in dendritric form and is scraped therefrom. The anode face is porous and connections are provided for withdrawing gaseous products from the face as they are formed. Operation is continuous, recovered metal being flushed from the cell in spent electrolyte as the latter is displaced by fresh electrolyte.

    • An enclosure assembly for apparatuses of the type for removing solid contaminates from a gaseous stream including a support member having a plurality of wall members mounted so as to define an enclosed area therebetween. At least one wall member extends between others of the wall members defining compartments for the enclosure. Each compartment includes a removable wall member to enable access to the interior of each compartment. A quickreleasable locking assembly releasably secures the removable wall member of each compartment to at least one other of the wall members of each compartment. Each locking assembly includes at least one yieldable locking member which is connected in snapaction relation between the removable wall member and the other wall member to facilitate removal of the removable wall member of one compartment to enable access to the interior of the associated compartment while the remaining compartments remain enclosed.

    • A method and apparatus for cleaning a fabric tubular type filter element in a dust collector by imparting a momentary pneumatic pulse to the filter element at predetermined intervals. The pulse is imparted to the filter by reversing the direction of the air flow through it and immediately thereafter restoring normal flow of air through the filter element, all within a period of a fraction of a second. The apparatus includes a high speed electric motor having an extension on its shaft which is directly coupled to a valve member through a screw and nut coupling. The valve member is movable in a direction extending axially of the motor axis and is disposed between two aligned but spaced apart valve seats, one of which is in communication with a source of less-than-air pressure and the other of which is in communication with the atmosphere. As the valve moves from one seat to the other, communication between the filter element and the source of less-than-air pressure is shut off and simultaneously the filter element is in communication with the atmosphere. The motor is reversed as soon as the valve shuts off the source of less-thanair pressure and the valve seat is immediately returned to its original position, where it shuts off communication between the filter element and the atmosphere. The motor is actuated at cyclic intervals by any one of various forms of timing or pressure responsive devices.

    • A brake is cooperatively operable with a clutch having an extended, open-ended drum rotating with an input shaft. A brake hub, spaced concentrically about the shaft at the drum''s open end, carries a reactor plate and a first set of friction plates splined thereto, and the hub is capable of only limited rotation relative to a stationary reaction plate facing the reactor plate because of bearing balls interposed between the plates in complemental ramp seats. The clutch drum carries a second set of annular friction plates splined in its extended end to sandwich between the first set of friction plates. The clutch drum and second set of friction plates rotate freely about the hub in the driving direction but, upon reversal of rotation, frictional drag between the friction plates slightly rotates the hub to move the balls up their ramps to wedge the reactor plate away from the reaction plate, whereupon the reactor plate urges the first set of friction plates to clamp the second set to stop drum rotation.
