    • Improved spray guns each have a spray head assembly comprising separate but interconnectable elements including a fluid nozzle, a fluid inlet fitting, a fluid nozzle retainer, an air nozzle and an air cap. The elements mount on an annular extension at a forward end of the gun body without any threaded attachment to the body, and because they are separate the fluid nozzle and fluid inlet fitting may conveniently be manufactured of a corrosion and wear resistant material to protect the same from fluid flowing therethrough. Also, the air cap threads onto the fluid nozzle retainer and not the gun body, so there is no danger of damaging any threads on the body which could otherwise require its replacement.

    • A reversible airless nozzle for a spray gun comprises an adapter mounted on a forward end of the gun, a filter in the adapter and an airless spray tip captured between the adapter and a safety cap. Should a small outlet orifice from the spray tip become plugged, it may be cleared by inserting the spray tip into the forward end of the adapter in the direction reverse to that for normal spraying, and then briefly triggering the spray gun to eject the blockage. The spray tip is carried in a housing adapted for a snug fit into the forward end of the adapter during cleaning, and an insert in the housing prevents the spray tip from being forced from the housing when reverse hydraulic pressures are applied.

    • To measure the flow rate of a fluid in a pipe, a heat pulse is injected into the fluid by a heat pulse generator, and the time of flight of the pulse between the generator and a sensor is measured. Arrival of the pulse at the sensor is determined by detecting a selected temperature level of the ascending flank of the pulse, and a predetermined temperature level of the descending flank is then detected to initiate generation of the next subsequent pulse. Since the temperature of the descending flank generally represents the temperature of the fluid between the heat pulse generator and sensor, the technique ensures that the accuracy of each successive flow rate measurement is not affected by residual heat from the preceding measurement, and yet enables measurements to be obtained at maximum frequencies. In one embodiment the measurements are used to control the flow rate of the measured fluid, and in another the flow rate of fluid in one or more additional pipes.

    • A flushable manifold for diaphragm protected components of a pressure transducer for sensing a flow of fluid comprises a housing having a recess therein and a diaphragm of flexible material over and closing the recess. Inlet and outlet passages communicate with the recess adjacent to and on opposite sides of its periphery, such that fluid introduced at the inlet flows through the manifold to the outlet, with the presence of fluid pressure within the manifold being detected in response to outward deflection of the diaphragm. To facilitate cleaning the manifold of fluid of one type in preparation for receiving fluid of another, one or more channels are formed in the housing within the recess in communication with the inlet and extend toward peripheral side areas of the recess to direct flushing media introduced at the inlet across all of the surfaces of the manifold and to the outlet to thoroughly clean the same. Absent the channels "dead spaces" would exist in the manifold and the flushing media would tend to follow a straight line path of least resistance between the inlet and outlet, thereby failing to satisfactorily clean side areas of the manifold.

    • An adjustable pressure control device relies on the change of shape or position of a control hose portion responsive to internal pressure of fluid being transmitted therethrough to control the fluid pressure produced by a pump. One embodiment of the device utilizes a short piece of high pressure hose in the fluid line which is adjustably deformed. As pressure builds up in the hose, the hose tends to return to its original shape, thereby actuating a suitable control instrumentality for the pump, such as an electric switch which opens the circuit to an electric clutch or to an electric drive motor for the pump, thereby temporarily stopping the pumping action. Another embodiment, to accomplish the same function, relies on the change of the arcuate position of a control hose due to variations in fluid pressure therein.

    • A pressure regulated electric pump is characterized by a positive displacement double acting reciprocating pump driven by an electric motor through a planetary roller screw. A controller senses the pressure of liquid at an outlet from the pump and varies the speed of the motor in a manner to maintain the pressure substantially constant. At a constant flow demand from the pump the motor is operated at a substantially constant speed. As flow demand rises and falls the instantaneous pump outlet pressure falls and rises. The changing pressure is sensed by the controller which makes incremental changes in the speed of the motor to cause the motor to speed up during a pressure fall and to slow down during a pressure rise, in such manner as to maintain pump outlet pressure substantially constant. Using a planetary roller screw to couple the electric motor rotary output to the pump provides a load torque on the motor that is directly proportional to pump outlet pressure plus frictional losses in the pump and drive mechanism. The result is a decrease in the magnitude of pressure drops and spikes in the pumped liquid at the time of changeover of the pump, i.e., at the time the direction of reciprocation of the pump changes.
