    • Thin-wall sleeve splining apparatus (10) is disclosed as including a loader (22) having a radially expandable mandrel (24) which is inserted within a dual ended thin-wall sleeve (14) to secure the sleeve in preparation for splining one of its ends (12,16). A rotatable loading spindle (26) supports the expandable mandrel (24) and is moved by an actuator (28) to position the sleeve over a toothed mandrel (20) whereupon a pair of toothed dies (18) are moved in opposite directions to mesh die and mandrel teeth with the sleeve therebetween to form the thin-wall splines. After the splining, the actuator (28) moves the loading spindle (26) away from the toothed mandrel (20) for unloading of the splined sleeve. In the preferred construction of the apparatus, the toothed forming dies are embodied by elongated die racks (18) that are slidably mounted by upper and lower bases (32,34) of a splining machine (30). An external collet (110) of the expandable mandrel (24) is radially expanded and contracted by a hydraulic operator (118) to provide clamping and unclamping of the sleeve. Two expandable mandrels (24,24') are disclosed to provide splining of both ends of the sleeve (14).

    • A rotary forming machine and a rotary tool utilized therewith for performing a forming operation on a workpiece. A work spindle rotatably mounts the workpiece about a first axis and a pair of tool spindles which each support a plurality of the tools are rotatably mounted about spaced second axes on opposite sides of the first axis. Each tool has a partially circular forming face extending about the associated tool spindle axis for an angle less than 180 degrees with forming projections that engage the workpiece. Associated pairs of the tools on the two tool spindles cooperate with each other to simultaneously form the workpiece in an opposed relationship to each other. Each tool includes a metallic body with a leading end and a trailing end between which its forming face extends as do base and side wall surfaces. The rotary tools preferably have elongated shapes with maximum heights that are approximately 25 percent of their length. The tool spindles are mounted for movement toward and away from each other to permit the forming of workpieces of different sizes, while a pair of tension members prevent movement of the tool spindles away from each other. The forming projections on the rotary tool are disclosed as teeth for providing a splining or gear forming operation. During forming of a workpiece, a double enveloping worm gear drive train for the tool spindles, a timing gear drive for the work spindle, and a drive control cooperate to provide precise forming.

    • A method and apparatus for making rotary die racks having an elongated shape including a partially circular forming face of less than 180.degree. and a flat mounting surface that faces in the opposite direction as the forming face. Cast metal blanks of the die racks are secured to a rotatable spindle in a side-by-side relationship to turn the forming faces. Forming projections, i.e. teeth that extend parallel to the axis of the forming face, are then cut in the turned face. Heat treating of the die racks is then performed before mounting thereof on a fixture to perform a finish grinding of the teeth. The spindle preferably includes a spindle member and a central shaft on which the spindle member is mounted for rotation. The fixture includes a pair of spaced end plates and a bed that extends between the end plates and has a stop and an adjustable positioner for clamping the die racks.

    • Apparatus and a method for burnishing gears incorporating a pair of gear racks having opposed forming faces with teeth spaced therealong for meshing with a toothed gear received therebetween to provide the sole support for the gear as it is rotated by rack movement while the rack teeth burnish the gear teeth. A loader is positioned on one lateral side of the gear racks and includes a movable gripper mechanism that positions the gears to be burnished between the racks for meshing engagement therewith as the racks are driven by a reciprocal drive mechanism of the apparatus. Grippers of the gripper mechanism grip the gears during loading and have pushers that push the burnished gears to a delivery guide on the opposite lateral side of the gear racks from the loader. A movable guide member of the guide is fixed to one of the gear racks and receives the burnished gears to feed the gears to a stationary guide member as a pusher fixed to the other gear rack moves the burnished gears during reciprocal driving of the gear racks. A conveyor for feeding the loader includes gear carriers supported by a continuous chain trained over a pair of spaced sprockets. One of the sprockets is adjustably supported by a chain tensioner while the other sprocket is driven by a cylinder and indexing arm through a one-way clutch in order to move the chain and the gears carried by the carriers on the chain.

    • A method and machine for splining a power transmission member by rolling are disclosed as well as the resultant splined member. An externally toothed pinion-type mandrel of the machine is rotatably mounted between a pair of elongated dies. An unsplined member is supported by the mandrel so that sliding movement of the elongated dies from an end-to-end relationship to an overlapping relationship meshes teeth on the dies and the teeth on the mandrel with a thin-walled annular sleeve portion of the member therebetween. The meshing of the die and mandrel teeth deforms the sleeve portion of the member radially to form the splines and also rotates the mandrel to complete the spline forming operation about the total circumference of the member. The mandrel may be removably mounted in a manner that permits a pair of the members to be simultaneously splined by a single stroke of the elongated dies. The mandrel and one of the dies include synchronizing teeth that are directly meshed with each other to synchronize the commencement of mandrel rotation with the commencement of die movement. The die teeth are sized to form the splines radially in a unique progressive manner and have tooth forms that prevent slippage between the dies and the sleeve portion being splined. Also, the teeth may form the lengths of the splines progressively to lessen the maximum tooth load and thereby increase the die life. The splined member has relatively tough splines and an end mounting wall that is maintained flat during the spline rolling.

    • A vertical rack-type spline-forming machine based on a novel slide base arrangement comprising a pair of vertical slide bases structurally joined by a symmetrically arranged set of tie bars. The structurally-joined vertical slide bases can be rested in an upright position on a non-structural space frame which provides improved access and lift capabilities to the vertical machine. The machine also includes a novel drive system using independent electric motors, one motor associated with each vertical slide base to drive the rack on that base through a roller screw shaft mechanism. The racks are further electronically synchronized through position signals communicated between the motor drives, and the rack home positions are calibrated with electronic "datums" programmed into the motor drives and capable of being re-calibrated in programmable fashion if one of the racks loses synchronicity.
