    • An angular indexing apparatus for a machine tool includes a rotating shaft, to which a rotationally driven member is secured; a housing, which surrounds the outer periphery of the rotating shaft and which is mounted to and removed from the body of the machine tool; bearings disposed between the housing and the rotating shaft; and driving means, disposed between the housing and the rotating shaft, and rotating the rotating shaft to index an angular position. The driving means includes drive motors, each having a motor rotor and a motor stator concentrically disposed around the rotating shaft in the housing. The drive motors are disposed in series and separated from each other in an axial direction of the rotating shaft. At least one of the housing and the rotating shaft is such that portions thereof are connected to each other so as to be capable of being divided from each other in the axial direction of the rotating shaft. The housing and the rotating shaft are made to correspond to the plurality of drive motors respectively, to connect portions thereof so as to be capable of being divided from each other.

The built-in unit (22) is connected to the enclosure unit (21) such that the built-in unit (22) can be inserted into and extracted from the enclosure unit (21), thus facilitating connection and disconnection of wiring between the stator of a DD motor mounted in a spindle head of a machine tool and a main body of the machine tool.

The rotation-resistance device includes a damping device (10) including a damping member, which is provided at the frame body 2 or the rotating body 65 and which includes a resiliently deformable damping section, a pressing-force applying device 66, which applies a pressing force to the damping member by operating fluid, and a damping surface 32, provided at a side of the frame body 2. The damping device 10 causes the pressing force to act upon the damping section to flex the damping section, so that the damping surface 32 and a sliding surface 33 are pressed against each other, and a rotation resistance that allows rotation is applied to the rotating body 65. A low-friction coefficient member 60 is secured to at least one of the damping surface 32 and the sliding surface 33.
