    • An optical reproduction apparatus in accordance with the present invention has a gain control circuit for controlling a gain of an amplifier circuit which amplifies a reproduction signal in accordance with amplitudes of the reproduction signal from an optical recording medium. The amplitude is sent to a power control calculation circuit which controls the reproduction power of a light beam in accordance with the amplitude. The gain control circuit has a slower response speed than that of the power control circuit at least during a period when the power control circuit controls the reproduction power. This allows to provide an optical reproduction apparatus that can realize the stable reproduction power and automatic gain control even to the unevenness of the amplitudes of the reproduction signal.

    • A magneto-optical disk reproducing device includes a clock producing circuit, which, on the basis of a reproducing signal from recorded marks recorded in a magneto-optical disk, produces a timing offset from peak positions of the reproducing signal; an A/D converter, which samples the reproducing signal in accordance with the timing, and outputs a reproducing signal quantity; and a short mark signal quantity averaging circuit and a long mark signal quantity averaging circuit, each of which averages a plurality of reproducing signal quantities. By this means, the A/D converter is able to sample the reproducing signal at more timings than when a reproducing signal is detected at peak positions thereof, and the magneto-optical disk reproducing device can detect the foregoing ratio more precisely. Consequently, the magneto-optical disk can control the light quantity of the light beam more accurately.

    • An optical reproducing device is provided with predetermined length mark signal measurement means which measures amplitude values of a 2T mark and an 8T mark, which are a short reproducing power control mark and a long reproducing power control marks, respectively, from information data recorded in an magneto-optical disk. Reproducing power of a light beam is controlled by a laser power control circuit, based on the amplitude values of the 2T mark and the 8T mark. The predetermined length mark signal measurement means detects a specific pattern including the 2T mark from a bit arrangement pattern of the information data, and measures the amplitude value of the 2T mark correponding only to the 2T mark included in the specific pattern. This structure can provide an optical reproducing device which can maintain the reproducing power at an optimum value and reduce the probability of reading errors, without reducing the utilization ratio of an optical recording medium.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for optimally controlling the width of recording marks formed by a light beam on an optical recording medium in an optical recording apparatus. The method is accomplished by selecting and storing in a storage device a predetermined optimal read signal value, and then setting a plurality of selectable predetermined recording conditions in the optical recording apparatus. These conditions differ from one another in the quantity of light in the light beam, or in the strength of an external magnetic field. In the optical recording apparatus, a set of first test patterns then are recorded by the light beam on separate first tracks of the optical recording medium under each of the predetermined conditions. Similarly, a second test track is recorded onto the optical recording medium under the same predetermined conditions adjacent to each of the first test tracks. The first test tracks are thereafter read by the optical recording apparatus, and the amplitude of the read signals is stored in the storage device, along with an indication of the predetermined recording signal condition under which it was generated. Finally, using a comparison device, the stored signal quantities are compared to the predetermined optimal read signal value. The optimal one of the predetermined recording conditions to be used by the optical recording apparatus is determined to be the condition associated with the one of the stored signals that most closely approximates the predetermined optimal signal value.
