摘要： A system for positioning a data storage cartridge in a read/write mechanism in which alignment holes in the cartridge are pre-aligned to alignment pins on the read/write mechanism. The system includes a beveled recess in the front surface of the cartridge, a pair of holes in the bottom surface of the cartridge and four alignment pins affixed to the read/write mechanism. The third and fourth alignment pins are oriented perpendicular to and project out toward the second planar surface of the cartridge. The first, second, third and fourth alignment pins are disposed such that when the cartridge reaches the pre-aligned position the first alignment pin bottoms out in the beveled recess, the second alignment pin abuts the first planar surface at a location away from the beveled recess, the third alignment pin is substantially aligned with one of the holes in the second planar surface and the fourth alignment pin is substantially aligned with the other of the holes in the second planar surface.

摘要： A leader pin assembly for attachment to tape as a generic and space-efficient interface between tape and equipment which manipulates the tape, and a method for making the same. The leader pin assembly preferably includes a leader pin, an elastomer element, and a clip. The leader pin is barbell-shaped, having enlarged ends and at least one pair of flanges each spaced a distance from a respective enlarged end to define a pair of recesses and a center section of the leader pin. The center section of the leader pin is sized to permit tape to be wound around the center section, with the elastomer element surrounding the tape and with the clip snugly surrounding the elastomer element to keep the tape securely in place around the center section of the leader pin. The end surfaces of the leader pin may have an outward curve to ensure smooth movement across equipment surfaces during leader pin assembly manipulation. Also the edges of the leader pin may be radiused.

In order to effectively use the leader with the cleaning characteristic, the tape is fully unreeled to expose the abrasive leader (27) only when a requirement to clean the tape head transducers is sensed. During normal operation, the trailing leader (25) which includes the cleaning leader (27) is not exposed to the tape transducer head, but instead remains on the supply reel.

The release mechanism is movable between a first position in which the release mechanism is not engaged by the tape drive and the locking member is locked and a second position in which the tape drive engages the release mechanism and the locking member is unlocked.
