    • A valvulotome that cuts a vein valve leaflet from apex to edge by applying a tensile force to the leaflet. The valvulotome has a shaft, on the distal end of which is a laterally-offset extension, to the distal end of which is attached the distal end of a blade with a curved cutting edge. The blade is substantially parallel to the shaft. The cutting edge faces the extension, which shields the cutting edge. Opposite the cutting edge, the blade has a blunt back that has a substantially straight part, and a part, towards its proximal end, that curves towards the extension. The blade may be pivotally attached to the extension with an actuator that opens or closes the blade. A method of using the valvulotome to carry out a valvotomy in a vein includes piercing the valve leaflet with the valvulotome close to the apex of the leaflet, and applying a tensile force to the leaflet with the valvulotome to cut the leaflet from apex to edge.

    • Opposable surgical clamp members having opposable resilient pads with wedge-shaped and cylindrical protrusions extending from the surfaces of the pads and the use of such members for occluding vessels and other tubular body structures are described. The protrusions are arranged such that when the members are moved toward one another, the protrusions of one pad interdigitate with the protrusions of the other pad. Upon engagement with a vessel, portions of the vessel are forced into the interdigital spaces providing for improved gripping of the vessel. The protrusions also resist lateral or transverse movement of a clamped vessel relative to the pads. The existence of holes under the pad surface alters the relative resiliency of the pad, allowing for an overall pad resiliency that minimizes trauma to a clamped vessel while allowing the local resiliency of the protrusions themselves to be of a hardness to avoid excessive deflection and retain the desired shape and gripping ability.

    • A valvulotome for disrupting vein valves in in-situ procedures, and for distrupting the vein valves in vein segments to be used in CABG procedures. The valvulotome includes an elongate blade mounting member and a thin, scythe-shaped cutting blade. The cutting blade is mounted relative to the blade mounting member such that the plane defined by the blade lies on the axis defined by the blade mounting member. The cutting blade has a fixed end, a free end, a cutting edge and a blunt back edge. The fixed end is fixedly attached to a distal portion of the blade mounting member. The sharpened edge faces towards the blade mounting member, which protects the vein from the sharpened edge. The sharpened edge arcs outwards and proximally from the distal portion of the blade mounting member, and terminates in a proximal portion, spaced from the blade mounting member. The blunt back edge is opposite the sharpened edge, facing the vein. The free end is opposite the fixed end and connects the blunt back edge to the proximal portion of the sharpened edge. The free end including a blunt proximal-facing portion that forms a continuation of the blunt back edge.
