    • A device for generating conditioned electrical signals in response to forces applied to the device. The device includes a shaft attached to a substrate. Several strain sensitive resistors are mounted on the substrate around the shaft for generating an electrical signal representative of a magnitude and direction of force applied to the shaft by a user. Several apertures are in the substrate, each aperture is located between a pair of strain sensitive resistors. The apertures concentrate the stress on the resistors. A signal conditioning device is mounted to the substrate and is electrically connected to the resistors for conditioning the electrical signal. The signal conditioning device receives the electrical signal in an analog form and provides a conditioned signal as an output in a digital form. The device is mounted to a keyboard base. An alternative embodiment is shown using a cavity instead of apertures in the substrate.

    • A thermal printer that includes a thermally conductive sacrificial member disposed between the thermal print head and the web. The sacrificial member is held generally under tension and prevents the web from directly engaging the thermal print head. The sacrificial member may take one of many different forms, including a fixed strip or belt, a rotatable, continuous belt which slowly recirculates during printing to equalize wear across its surface, or a Moebius loop which further provides that wear is equalized across both sides of the belt. By providing a sacrificial member between the print head and web, wear and exposure of the print head is reduced, thereby prolonging the life of the print head.

    • An array resistor network that has a high density of resistors per unit area. The array resistor network includes a ceramic substrate having a top and bottom surface. Apertures extend through the substrate between the top and bottom surfaces. Recesses are located on opposite edges of the substrate. Resistors are located on the top surface. Each resistor is located between a recess and an apertures. Inner conductors are connected to one end of the resistors. The Inner conductors are located on the top surface and extend through the aperture onto the bottom surface. Outer conductors are connected to another end of the resistors. The outer conductors are located on the top surface and extend along the recess onto the second surface.

    • The cost and complexity of connecting electrically actuated devices to a game control microprocessor in a coin operated amusement game can be reduced by utilizing a standard control assembly including a memory element for each of the devices and where a control circuit is used to connect the assemblies in series with the microprocessor. Data and clock lines in the control circuit are used to transmit control signals to the devices and the control circuit can additionally include power supply lines and a ground line. A similar arrangement can be used to transport data representing the status of game operated switches to the microprocessor.

    • A ribbon cartridge for a thermal transfer printer is configured to provide a retractable feed for a donor ribbon. The ribbon cartridge includes a housing, a roll of donor ribbon wound on a core within the housing, and a clutch operatively coupled to the core. A resilient structure is coupled to the clutch and to the cartridge housing such that the release of energy stored in the resilient structure by advance of the donor ribbon produces retraction of ribbon slack, if the donor ribbon is released or backfed. Alternatively, a ribbon roll having a self-contained clutching and slack take-up capability includes a hollow core configured to receive a roll of ribbon and a clutch having a friction component configured to induce frictional engagement with the core. At least one end of the clutch is adapted to be externally constrained, and a resilient component is located between the friction component and at least one end of the clutch.
