    • A process of producing a propellant charge igniter for cartridge ammunition of the type including an ignition tube with a booster charge, wherein the ignition tube is composed of a sheathing tube (4) with ignition openings (3) and a thin-walled protective tube (6) which is arranged inside the sheathing tube (4) in order to protect the booster charge, and wherein the external wall of the protective tube fits against the internal wall of the sheathing tube (4) and covers the ignition openings (3). To avoid microscopic gaps between the sheathing tube and the protective tube, which gaps influence the performance of the propellant charge igniter, a paste-like sealing agent (5) is introduced into the sheathing tube (4) before the protective tube (6) is inserted into the sheathing tube (4), and only then is the protective tube (6) inserted into the sheathing tube (4) to displace the sealing agent. Alternatively with the protective tube (6) being fully inserted, the ignition openings (3) in the sheathing tube (4) are filled with a sealing agent (5) and then the protective tube (6) as well as the sheathing tube (4) are moved axially, relative to each other.

To effect the injection of the liquid propellant (13, 13') into the chamber (5), primarily with a view toward short loading times, openings (10, 10', 18, 18') are provided in the barrel wall portion (9) defining the chamber (5), and these openings are connected by valves (12, 12') with containers (14, 14') containing the liquid propellant (13, 13'). The valves may be directly responsive to the maximum pressure in the chamber (5) to directly inject a measure or quantity of the liquid propellant into the charge chamber or prior to firing of a charge in the charge chamber (5) may supply the measured quantity of additional liquid propellant to a further tubular container (16, 16') connected at both ends to the charge chamber (5).     • A method and an apparatus for producing a large-caliber ammunition unit including a combustible or partially combustible propelling charge casing and compacted or partially compacted propelling charge powder, to increase internal ballistic performance. It is known to partially or completely compact or compress the propelling charge powder in a cartridge casing. However, such methods generally cannot be employed for ammunition including a combustible or at least partially combustible propelling charge casing because of the lower strength of the relatively thin-walled combustible casing material, as this would lead to deformation and/or to reduced loadability of such cartridges. The present invention permits the compaction or partial compaction of the propelling charge powder of an ammunition unit including a combustible propelling charge casing in that a pressing mold or matrix is employed which directly encloses the propelling charge casing, with an appropriate annular gap being left free between the inner surface of the propelling charge casing and the outer surface of the press die in dependence on the grain dimension of the propelling charge powder grains to be compacted so that the propelling charge powder can be compacted almost without shear forces with respect to the inner surface of the propelling charge casing.
