    • A memory card reader is disclosed. In one embodiment, the memory card reader comprises a first slot to receive a first memory card of a first format; a second slot to receive a second memory card of a second format having fewer interface pins than the first format; an Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) interface for transferring data to a system; and a single IDE converter, coupled to the IDE interface and the first and second slot, to interface with a memory card of the first format inserted in the first slot or a memory card of the second format inserted in the second slot, to convert signals from the first or second memory card into a format for the IDE interface, and the converter to detect a card inserted in the first or second slot by detecting a voltage change in the first or second slot. In a second embodiment, the memory card reader comprises a single-slot configured to receive one of first memory card type without an adapter and a second memory card type via an adapter; an Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) interface for transferring data to a system; and an IDE converter coupled to the IDE interface and the single slot, the converter to interface with one of the first or second memory card type inserted in the single slot and to convert signals from an inserted memory card to a format for the IDE interface, the converter to detect an inserted card by reading one or more pins of a first set of pins of the single slot, and to identify a type of card inserted based on reading one or more pins of a second set of pins of the single slot.

    • A plurality of flash (solid state) media coupled to a single form factor connector to provide a module, i.e., referred to as a SmartStack module, that can be coupled directly to a device with a SmartStack module controller. The SmartStack module does not include a controller and is controlled from the host side. The form factor connector would typically be a CompactFlash (CF) form factor or some other form factor used in a variety of devices. The SmartStack memory module in a preferred embodiment includes a write protect switch that prevents certain portions of the memory within the SmartStack module from being written to. In addition, a portion of the flash memory will be allocated to the secure area for storing information to implement various forms of security. Another portion of the flash memory is allocated to store optional biometric information such as a user's fingerprint or retinal scan information, etc. In a preferred embodiment, the SmartStack module is a flash memory card in a CF Type I or II format; however, the card will not be compatible with standard CF readers, but will be compatible with SmartStack readers. Larger memory sizes will be available as larger flash memory chips become available.

    • A multi-memory media adapter comprised of a first planar element having an upper surface and a lower surface, a second planar element having an upper surface and a lower surface, and formed from a single material. The two planar elements form at least one port, each port capable of receiving one or more types of a memory media card. The adapter has at least one set of contact pins protruding from the lower surface of the first planar element or the upper surface of the second planar element such that the at least one set of contact pins are disposed within the port. The at least one set of contact pins are capable of contacting the contacts of a memory media card inserted into the port. For one embodiment a controller chip is embedded within the single material forming the multi-memory media adapter.

    • A single-slot multi-flash-card reader is disclosed. The flash card reader includes an Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) interface for transferring data to a personal computer; and an IDE converter, coupled to the IDE interface, for converting multiple flash-card interfaces to a format used by the personal computer interface. The multiple flash-card interfaces include a CompactFlash interface and smaller interfaces having fewer pins that the CompactFlash interface. The flash card reader includes a CompactFlash connector, coupled to the IDE converter, for receiving a CompactFlash card through a single slot in the single-slot multi-flash-card reader, the CompactFlash connector making electrical connection with the CompactFlash card for signals in the CompactFlash interface. The flash card reader also includes an adapter, having a physical shape to remove or insert into the CompactFlash connector. The adapter has a mating CompactFlash connector that fits the CompactFlash connector. The adapter also has a smaller connector, the smaller connector for fitting to other flash-memory cards having the smaller interfaces. The reader includes a wiring means, in the adapter, connected between the smaller connector and the mating CompactFlash connector, for directly connecting signals from the smaller connector in the smaller interface with signals in the mating CompactFlash connector. The adapter allows the other flash-memory cards having the smaller interfaces to fit into the CompactFlash connector through the single slot to be read by the IDE converter. A system and method in accordance with the present invention allows an IDE interface to replace the USB interface. This will allow a flash reader to be built that could be put into the front panel of a PC in a manner that is similar to placing a CDROM into the front panel.
