    • An authentication apparatus includes an input unit which inputs information on a user's fingerprint, an enrolled-image storage which stores a plurality of enrolled images, namely a plurality of fingerprint images, to be verified against a fingerprint image generated by the input unit, and an authentication unit which authenticates the user's fingerprint in a manner such that verification of the fingerprint image against the plurality of enrolled images stored in the enrolled-image storage is performed sequentially in two stages. In the two stages in the verification performed in the authentication unit, enrolled images to be used in the subsequent stage are selected, in the earlier stage thereof, by verifying the fingerprint image against the plurality of enrolled images, and then the user's fingerprint is identified by verifying the fingerprint image against the selected enrolled images in the subsequent stage.

    • A data holding unit holds data sets each composed of a fingerprint image and recording setting data associated with the fingerprint image. A fingerprint image acquisition unit acquires a fingerprint image newly from a user. A similarity value calculation unit compares the fingerprint image newly acquired from the user and the fingerprint image held in the data holding unit, and indicates a degree of similarity therebetween as a similarity value by using a similarity evaluation function for indicating a degree of similarity between a plurality of types of fingerprint images. A load data selection unit reads recording setting data corresponding to a fingerprint image having a similarity value reaching or exceeding a predetermined value if the fingerprint image is held in the data holding unit, and reads certain data prepared in advance if not.

    • A touch response device for an electronic musical instrument includes pressure detector for detecting initial-touch and after-touch of a key. The pressure detector means has two or more response stages that have different response characteristics to key pressure variation. An initial-touch-detector signal is produced when the pressure detecting means is in a first response stage among the response stages, and after-touch-detector signal is produced when the pressure detecting means is in a second response stage among the response stages. According to the invention, initial-touch signal and after-touch signal are generated by the use of one common operation-detector signal produced from the pressure detector means. As a result, the construction of the pressure detecting means is much simplified compared with a conventional touch-response device provided with two separate detectors, one of which detects initial-touch and another of which detects after-touch.
