    • An ink jet recorder is provided with a recovery device for preventing unsatisfactory ink discharge of a recording head, the recovery device being provided with ink suction means having a cap covering an ink discharge port, a vent valve for opening and closing the interior of the cap with respect to the atmosphere and a suction pump for producing a negative pressure in the cap, and wiping means having a cleaning blade adapted to be advanced and retracted relative to the ink discharge port. The cleaning blade is protruded when a motor effecting the sequence operation of the ink suction means revolves in one direction, and is stopped at its retracted position when the motor revolves in the opposite drection. A method of operating such ink jet recorder is characterized by operating the recovery device in one cycle sequence comprising the steps of bringing the cap into intimate contact with the ink discharge port, closing the vent valve, operating the suction pump, opening the vent valve, restoring the suction pump to its initial state, operating the suction pump, restoring the suction pump to its initial state, closing the vent valve, spacing the cap apart from the surface of the ink discharge port, opening the vent valve, and restoring the suction pump to its initial state.

    • The present invention provides an image forming system including a containing portion capable of containing a first sheet supporting means for stacking and supporting sheets, extender means for expanding a containing space of the containing portion in a height direction so that a second sheet supporting means having sheet containing ability greater than that of the first sheet supporting means can be contained in the expanded containing space, sheet supply means for feeding out the sheet from the first or second sheet supporting means contained in the containing portion; and image forming means for forming an image on the sheet fed by the sheet supply means.     • An ink jet recording apparatus has plural ink discharge portions, in corresponding recording heads, for discharging different color inks. The ink discharge portions are arranged with a discharge portion for relatively light ink always followed by a discharge portion for relatively dark ink (a given ink being lighter than another ink if the color of a mixture of those two inks is closer to the color of the other ink than to the color of the given ink). A carriage for scanning the recording heads causes a retractable cleaning member and the ink discharge portions to move relative to each other in a single direction so that the ink discharge portions are cleaned only in the order of lighter to darker inks. A second cleaning member is disposed at a position opposed to the first cleaning member to clean the first cleaning member. The second cleaning member includes an ink absorbing member and a plate-like member abutting the ink absorbing member and having an opening therein for causing ink droplets adhered to the plate-like member to be drawn into the ink absorbing member by capillary action.
