    • A name mapper, name servers, and multimedia servers are connected to a multimedia manager. Each client has the name of a multimedia server, i.e., a virtual host name, from which it can obtain multimedia service. The name server stores associations of server host names to layer-3 addresses. When a client initiates a multimedia session, it requests the layer-3 address of the server that corresponds to its server's name. The name server sends the layer-3 address of the one of the multimedia servers that is currently designated as corresponding to that name. The multimedia client stores the name-to-layer-3 address binding in it's cache. The multimedia client then establishes communications with the multimedia server at that layer-3 address and clears its cache. The dynamic name-to-layer-3 address binding in the name server is managed by the name mapper, which may be collocated with the multimedia manager or may be located on a separate server. The multimedia server manager collects real-time status information so that it knows the availability of the multimedia servers in the network. If a multimedia server, whose layer-3 address is presently mapped to from a virtual host name, becomes unable to serve additional clients, the multimedia server manager sends a message to the name mapper to modify the name to layer-3 address binding. The modification specifies an available server's layer-3 address to be bound in place of that of the server that became unable to serve additional clients.

    • A pool of multimedia servers, which may be geographically diverse, are available to be allocated to serve one of at least two ELANs served by an ELAN contronect network. These multimedia servers are a) connected to, b) dynamically allocated to sub-ELANs, and c) managed by, a multimedia server manager, which is included as part of the ELAN contronect network. In particular, each of the multimedia servers is capable of having its addresses dynamically reconfigured in response to commands from the multimedia server manager to match that of an ELAN to which it is being made available, so that the multimedia server becomes a part of that ELAN. The multimedia server manager obtains a layer-3 address from address server 427 of the ELAN contronect network which it then assigns to the multimedia server so that the multimedia server appears to be a part of the ELAN to which it is assigned to serve. The multimedia server manager also supplies to the multimedia server the LES and BUS address of a sub-ELAN of the ELAN to which it is assigned to serve. The multimedia server can then join with the LES and BUS as a LEC in that sub-ELAN.

    • A method is provided for establishing a communication session over a path supported at least in part by a telephony network and an ATM network. The telephony network includes ingress and egress telephony switches and the ATM network includes ingress and egress ATM switches. A first call setup request is received at the ingress telephony switch from an originating node and the ingress telephony switch selects a first available trunk from the ingress telephony switch to the ingress ATM switch. A communications path is established over the available trunk to the ingress telephony switch. A second call setup request is transmitted from the ingress telephony switch to the egress telephony switch and the egress telephony switch selects a second available trunk from the egress telephony switch to the egress ATM switch. A third party set up command is transmitted from one of the telephony switches to one of the ATM switches requesting establishment of a virtual connection between the ingress and egress ATM switches over the ATM network. A virtual connection is established between the ingress and egress ATM switches. The egress telephony switch connects the second available trunk to a third trunk in communication with a destination node such that the destination node is informed of a request to establish a communication session with the originating node.
