    • An apparatus and a method for receiving and processing noisy communications signals automatically varies multiple processing parameters to both improve signal-to-noise ratio and to minimize delays in responding to changes in the incoming signal. The signal-to-noise ratio is improved with relatively stable signals by increasing the number of samples used in forming a processed signal value. In response to changes in signal input, the number of samples used in processing is substantially decreased while the sampling rate is substantially increased until the incoming signal exhibits an increased degree of stability. As the incoming signal becomes more stable, the number of samples used in performing a processed signal value is increased toward maximum and the sample rate is decreased. In an apparatus, noisy signals from an ambient condition sensor can be processed in control circuitry, which incorporates executable instructions, for carrying out signal processing with automatic multi-parameter variations in response to incoming signal characteristics. Processed signal values can be displayed locally or made available to a larger system.

    • A multi-function detector has at least two different sensors coupled to a control circuit. In a normal operating mode the control circuit, which could include a programmed processor, processes outputs from both sensors to evaluate if a predetermined condition is present in the environment adjacent to the detector. In this mode the detector exhibits a predetermined sensitivity. In response to a failure of one of the sensors, the control circuit processes the output of the remaining operational sensor or sensors so that the detector will continue to evaluate the condition of the environment with substantially the same sensitivity.

    • A system and a method for dynamically adjusting a level of filtering or smoothing applied to data received from fire detectors produces shortened response times for detection of a fire condition while at the same time minimizing the effects of uncorrelated noise in the absence of any fire condition. An increasing probability of a fire results in less filtering. Increasing values of the input signal from a respective detector, indicative of an increasing selected ambient condition such as combustion or temperature, provide a control input for reducing or bypassing the level of filtering of the respective input signal thereby reducing system response time. Where the unfiltered input data from a respective detector indicates a combustion or temperature profile moving toward clear air, the filtering or smoothing level can also be dynamically decreased thereby enabling the filtered signal values to return to their respective clear air values faster than would otherwise be the case. Detectors can be grouped and multiple unfiltered outputs can be assessed substantially simultaneously to determine whether or not levels of filtering or smoothing for the members of the group should be dynamically decreased.
