A reference to a change to metadata of a file of a file system is stored in a global sync list configured to store changes to metadata of a plurality of files of a plurality of file systems. The change to the metadata of the file is stored in a journal upon receiving an I/O request for the file of the file system. The journal includes metadata transactions upon the plurality of files of the plurality of the file system. The change to the metadata of the file of the file system is applied to metadata of the file system organized on a storage device using the reference to the change stored in the global sync list.

    • A method is used in enhancing memory buffering by using secondary storage. A buffer cache pool is supplemented with a secondary storage. A portion of a volatile memory of a data storage system is reserved as the buffer cache pool. The buffer cache pool includes a set of buffer cache objects for storing file system data and metadata. The secondary storage includes a set of data blocks. A first buffer cache object of the set of buffer cache objects is aged out by copying contents of the buffer cache object to a data block of the secondary storage. Contents of the first buffer cache object are retrieved from the secondary storage by copying contents of the data block of the secondary storage to a second buffer cache object of the set of buffer cache objects of the buffer cache pool.

    • A method is used in managing logical views of directories. A directory logical view is created from a primary logical view. The primary logical view includes a set of storage objects. The directory logical view includes a subset of the set of storage objects. A root of the directory logical view indicates a file directory. The file directory includes the subset of the set of storage objects in a hierarchy. A mapping object is created for the directory logical view. The mapping object manages access to the subset of the set of storage objects. The mapping object for the directory logical view is a version of a mapping object for the primary logical view. Information is removed from the mapping object for the directory logical view. Information remained in the mapping object after removing the information is associated with the file directory.

    • A file server has a data compression facility and also a snapshot copy facility or a data de-duplication facility that shares data blocks among files. Compression of the file data on a file system block basis leads to a problem of partially used file system data blocks when the data blocks are shared among files. This problem is solved by partial block allocation so that file system data blocks are shared among files that do not share identical data. Block pointers in the file mapping metadata point to virtual blocks representing the compressed data blocks, and associated virtual block metadata identifies portions of file system data blocks that store the compressed data. For example, a portion of a file system data block is identified by a sector bitmap, and the virtual block metadata also includes a reference count to indicate sharing of a compressed data block among files.
