    • Techniques for performing forward handover in a wireless communication system are disclosed. In one aspect, a user equipment (UE) transmits a connection request to a target eNodeB. The connection request may be transmitted when the UE detects a connection failure in a communication with a source eNodeB. The UE receives a connection response from the target eNodeB in response to the target eNodeB requesting handover preparation information from the source eNodeB. In another aspect, a target eNodeB may receive a connection request from a user equipment (UE) and transmit a radio link failure (RLF) recovery request message to a source eNodeB to prompt the source eNodeB to initiate handover of the UE from the source eNodeB.

    • A mobile communications system includes a radio access network, such as an Enhanced General Packet Radio Service (EGPRS) network, in which mobile stations are able to enter into a discontinuous transmission (DTX) mode. During DTX mode of a first mobile station that is allocated a channel portion (e.g., a time slot of a frame), the radio access network is able to multiplex traffic from another mobile station onto the same channel portion. A mechanism is provided to enable the first mobile station to send a request for re-allocation of the channel portion. The request includes a real-time fast access associated control channel (RTFACCH) resource request message (RTRRM). In response to the RTRRM, the radio access network sends an RTFACCH resource assignment message (RTUAM). An interleaving scheme is also provided for half-rate mobile stations, in which one set of traffic frames are interleaved over plural bursts according to a first algorithm and a second set of traffic frames are interleaved over plural bursts according to a second algorithm.

    • An efficient use of downlink (DL) air-interface bandwidth during handoff of user equipment from a source cell to a target is provided. In conjunction with a handoff message to ensure receipt, expedited status exchanges are provided so that initial communications do not require a subsequent retransmission of duplicate data. A method for transmitting a dedicated Random Access Channel (RACH) preamble and cell information, receiving a RACH from the user equipment to start communication, and transmitting a handover message and a radio link control (RLC) status message or an UL grant in response to receiving the RACH is provided. Also, a method for receiving a handover message and target cell information from a source cell to start handover negotiations, initiating communication with target cell using the target cell information, receiving a handover message and (RLC) status message, and using the received information to approximate status reporting is provided.
