    • Example embodiments provide for “heartbeat” subscriptions which can be thought of as pseudo-events that can occur periodically for any subscription. Notification of a heartbeat event can be sent in lieu of, or in addition to, regular events to inform the subscriber application of such things like the subscription is still active and/or that connectivity exists between the subscriber application and the publishing service application. Alternatively, if the heartbeat notification does not arrive at the subscriber application, then the client knows that the connectivity is bad or that the subscription has expired and it may take corrective action (e.g., attempt to re-subscribe to the appropriate subscription). Note that similar embodiments also apply to pull requests received by the publishing service from the subscriber.

    • Mechanisms for providing requested data items in a request-driven enumeration session while retaining control over how much inter-message context information is retained by the data provider. Upon receiving a request for the data items, the data provider identifies a portion of the data items to be provided in the first response along with context information that reflects that the first portion of information has been provided. The data provider then makes a determination of how much of the context is to be provided to the data receiver system, and then provides that appropriate context information to the data receiver. Furthermore, the data provider provides a response that includes the first portion of the data items. The data receiver includes this first provided context information in the second request for the next portion of the data items, allowing continuity in the data transfer session.

    • Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to determining effective policy when more than one policy may be associated with an entity. In aspects, bindings associate policies with target groups that may include one or more entities. The bindings are ordered by precedence. When properties of two or more policies affect an entity, properties of policies in higher precedence bindings control (e.g., override) properties of policies in lower precedence bindings. When a property of a policy is not included in other policies that affect an entity, the property is retained. A policy resolver determines disjoint target groups and a resultant policy associated with each disjoint target group. The resultant policy associated with a disjoint target group represents a combination of the original policies according to precedence.

    • Embodiments described herein are based on the principle that shells execute commands as units of characters sent within a message. Accordingly, embodiments herein provide for establishing a remote processing session for commands by using a binding mechanism that binds a series of commands to a remote shell using a message rather than a binary stream of data. More specifically, embodiments herein provided for a mechanism of encapsulating both a command and a binding mechanism (e.g., a shell identifier and/or shell token) into a single message. Accordingly, the binding mechanism can be used throughout the lifetime of the session and allows for modeling the shell processor session (its lifetime) as a series of commands, rather than as a series of characters. In addition, note that because the binding mechanism for the shell sessions is sent within messages, the problems associated with binary or character-by-character establishment of current shell sessions are overcome.

    • Embodiments described herein are based on the principle that shells execute commands as units of characters. Accordingly, embodiments herein provide for a sending side with enough intelligence to isolate each command, examine it, perform some levels of validation, and deliver a structured representation of the command to the remote processor before doing any network operations. More specifically, embodiments herein provided for a mechanism of identifying a command and encapsulating the command into a single message (e.g., a SOAP, HTTPS, or other type message), which is then sent to a remote shell for processing as an entire unit. Accordingly, embodiments herein treat the command as a single unit, rather than as a character-oriented transmission.
