    • Occipital plate systems are described. The occipital plate systems can include a novel occipital plate having an upper portion and lower portion. The lower portion can include an opening for receiving one or more lateral members therethrough. The lateral members include top and/or side apertures for receiving lateral connectors that are attached to polyaxial screw receiving members. The occipital plate systems can also include low-profile clamping arms that are operably attached to an occipital plate via an extension member and articulating joint member. The clamping arms, along with tension cables attached intermittently along its length, can be used in addition to or instead of screws and hooks to secure an occipital plate system to vertebrae.

    • A liquid-crystal matrix-type reflection mirror (10) with a localized dazzle light attenuation zone. The mirror has a multilayered structure and consists of a broadband reflective base mirror (12) having maximum reflectivity in the range corresponding to spectral range of halogen lamps of automobile headlights. Deposited on the base mirror are a matrix transparent electrode (14) and a photoconductive layer (20) placed on the matrix transparent electrode. The photoconductive layer (20) and the matrix transparent electrode (14) have a matrix-type structure formed as a pixel array. Each pixel of the matrix transparent electrode (14) is a projection of an overlaid pixel of the photoconductive layer (20). The multilayered structure further includes the following subsequent layers: a rear polarizer (22) which has a predetermined axis of polarization and is placed on the photoconductive layer, a common transparent electrode (36), a liquid crystal (25) sandwiched and sealed between the rear polarizer (22) and the common transparent electrode (36), a front polarizer (42), and an antireflection coating (44). The mirror (10) has a control circuit connected between the common transparent electrode (36) and the matrix transparent electrode. The control circuit applies a control voltage to the liquid crystal in accordance with the incident light. The pixel enabling just the dazzle light zone to be attenuating.

    • A surgical laser endoscopic focusing guide for a laser fiber optical link comprises a disposable unit (14) which is connected to the end of an optical fiber link (10). The unit consists of an endoscopic tube (16), the front end of which contains a mirror lens (22) for directing a laser beam emitted from the unit onto the operation area. The lens (22) bends the beam in a lateral direction onto a tissue to be treated. In an embodiment for laser angioplasty, the unit has a firm and reliable attachment directly to a buffer layer (80) of the optical fiber link. This ensures flexibility required for operaton in narrow and curved vessels and provides firm attachment of the mirror lens to the tube.

    • A noseshade for monitoring exposure to UV radiation comprises a contoured portion (100) having a clip (102) for attachment to a pair of glasses. The contoured portion of the noseshade incorporates a digital LCD (104), an information-display key (106), and input keys (108 and 110). A UV-enhanced photovoltaic photodetector (122) having a built-in amplifier (124) is mounted into the contoured portion of the noseshade, which also houses solar cells (112 and 114) and a microcontroller (118). The inner portion of the clip contains a pressure-sensitive switch (107) for activation of the solar cells.

    • A method and apparatus for transforming and steering laser beams directed from a laser sources onto a target area and composed of a visible guide beam and an invisible power beam which is guided and aimed by observing the position of the visible beam on the target area. The optical system of the apparatus (10) consists of a concave mirror (42) and a convex mirror (76). Both mirrors face each other. A hole (43) is made in the concave mirror (42) to ensure unobstructed passage of both beams to the convex mirror (76) from which the beams are reflected in a diverging pattern onto the concave mirror (42). The latter reflects the beams in a converging form onto a beam reflecting unit, such as beam splitter (84). The beam splitter is connected to a steering mechanism, which allows manipulation of the beams reflected from the splitter so that the position of the beams on the target area can be controlled. The visible guide beam and the invisible power beam coincide with each other and produce on the target area beam spots of identical diameters. This gives to a surgeon more confidence and improves the reliability and accuracy of the operation.
