    • A system for betting on fractional times comprises a memory coupled to a processor. The memory stores a first betting option comprising a bet that a particular participant in a race will finish a predetermined length of the race in a first range of fractional times. The memory further stores a second betting option comprising a bet that the particular participant in the race will finish the predetermined length of the race in a second range of fractional times. The processor receives a plurality of bets on at least one of the first betting option and the second betting option and determines an actual time for the particular participant to finish the predetermined length of the race. The processor then determines which of the plurality of bets are winning bets based at least in part upon the determination of the actual time and the corresponding betting options.

    • Apparatus for exercising a user's abdominal muscles and/or back muscles. This exercise apparatus includes a dynamic means in the form of an upper frame which is pivotally attached to a lower form. With the use of the user's abdominal and/or back muscles, the dynamic means produces a forward folding movement and a return straightening movement.     • A system and method for controlling a vehicle powertrain having an internal combustion engine include determining a difference between a desired engine torque and a current engine torque, adjusting the difference based on a stored torque offset corresponding to a current engine speed, and controlling the engine to produce a torque corresponding to the adjusted torque difference. The stored torque offset is adjusted when the engine is operating in a predetermined engine speed range based on a steady-state difference between the desired and current engine torque to reduce the steady-state difference to zero. The adjusted torque difference may be limited by a maximum-engine-torque-available parameter and a minimum-engine-torque-available parameter, which is based on an operating temperature, such as the engine coolant temperature. The system and method may also include controlling spark to rapidly reduce current engine torque to the adjusted torque difference value.

    • A method and system are provided for uniquely assigning identifications for a plurality of mail pieces, before physically sorting the mail pieces that will subsequently be mailed. Each of these identifications includes a sequential part, and each of the mail pieces includes postal destination information indicative of a destination area sort level. Preferably, not only that destination area sort level is included, but also at least one wider destination area sort level. The present invention entails determining whether a current mail piece has postal destination information indicative of the same destination area as a previously processed mail piece. If the destination area is the same, then the sequential part is assigned to the current mail piece, such that the sequential part is monotonically different from the sequential part of the previous mail pieces having the same destination area.
