    • An article sortation system includes a plurality of transport units which are movable along a conveying path between induction stations and discharge stations along each side of the conveying path. Each transport unit has side by side loading and support capability and is operable to receive packages from induction stations and discharge the packages at an appropriate discharge station. The system includes a control which determines the destination of articles and resolves blocking conditions between articles at the induction stations or at the transport units. The system may include a reinduction station for receiving an article from a transport unit and reinducting the article onto a transport unit, in order to resolve a blocking condition between a pair of articles on the respective transport unit.

    • A sortation system and method of inducting product are useful with a sorter having a continuous member defining a plurality of transport positions of the continuous member and a plurality of sort destinations for receiving product discharged from the continuous member. At least one induction unit is provided including a plurality of tandem conveying units. Product is received with the at least one induction unit from a product source and discharged from the at least one induction unit to the continuous member. According to one aspect of the invention, the at least one induction unit follows the speed of the continuous member. This includes starting as soon as the continuous member is moving and decreasing in speed substantially only when the continuous member decreases in speed. The invention is useful with linear sorters, such as positive displacement sorters, and the like. The invention is also useful with carousel sorters, such as tilt-tray sorters and cross-belt sorters.

    • The invention relates to a sorting conveyor provided with tilting bowls consisting of trucks (2) coupled to each other and transporting carrying bowls (8) which are tilted in the unloading position thereof by a rotary drive arranged on the truck (2). Said drive is connected by the free lower end thereof to a swinging lever (9) which extends downwards and rotates around a pivot axis arranged on the truck. Said lever carries the bowl (8) by the opposite top end thereof. According to the invention, the rotary drive is fixed to the free lower end of the swinging lever and provided with an electric motor (11) modifying the direction of rotation, and a tooth pinion (12) which is actuated by said motor and provided with an axis of rotation parallel to the pivot axis (7). Said pinion meshes with a rack gear (13) which is fixed to the truck in a perpendicular direction with respect to a displacement direction and equidistantly arranged with respect to the pivot axis (7) of the bearing bowl (8) and whose bend corresponds at least to a maximum angle of the swinging lever which is necessary for tilting the carrying bowl (8) in the unloading position thereof.

    • The present application discloses a method and apparatus for conveying parcels on a plurality of transport units (32) moving in a conveying path (30) between an induction station (26) and a discharge station (28). The invention provides the ability to handle parcels having a length greater than the length of a single transport unit by providing the ability to induct such parcel onto two contiguous transport units (32) and to discharge the parcel from the two contiguous transport units to a selected receiving port (46). For longer parcels, having a length greater than a given length, the parcel is inducted to two contiguous transport units by operating the induction belts and the carrier belts of the two contiguous transport units in a manner which positions the parcel on the two transport units. The carrier belts of the two transport units are operated in a manner that rotates longer parcels, having a length greater than the given length, in order to position the parcel on the two transport units. Crossbelt sortation system (25) is provided with a transport unit test station (96) that is positioned adjacent to the conveying path. The purpose of the test station is to test movement of the carrier belt associated with individual ones of the transport units passing the test station. Each of the transport units (32) includes a magnet (204a, 204b) that moves in proportion to the linear speed of the carrier belt (36) associated with that transport unit. The test station includes a sensor (200) that senses the magnet of a transport unit passing the test station. The sensor includes at least one Hall-effect cell (208a, 208b) and a magnetic antenna (210) coupled with the Hall-effect cell.
