    • A cylinder block for a water-cooled internal combustion engine has a top deck, a cylinder wall structure defining a row of cylinder bores, and a water jacket wall structure defining a water jacket around the cylinder bores.     • An apparatus and a method for controlling a feedback force applied by a joystick to a user gripping the control handle of the joystick. In the preferred embodiment, a light path between an infrared light source and a light sensor is interrupted by a user gripping the handle of a joystick. The output signal from the light sensor is employed by a processor to control the feedback force. When based upon the output signal, the processor determines that the user has just gripped the control handle, the processor enables the feedback force to increase slowly, over a sufficiently long time to enable the user to firmly grip the control handle before the feedback force becomes very strong. The processor immediately disables generation of the feedback force as soon as the user releases the control handle. The processor periodically energizes and then de-energizes the light source, determines an average value of the output signal when the light source is both energized and de-energized, and based upon a comparison of these average values, determines if the user's hand gripping the control handle has interrupted the light path between the source and light sensor. Additionally, the processor checks for a failure of the light source, and if detected, halts the generation of the feedback force.

    • A bathing apparatus for disabled and aged is presented which allows bathing of a person in a seated position in a wheel chair. The bathing apparatus is hygienic because the caster rollers for the wheel chair are isolated from the bath water in a non-water-filled section of the apparatus thus avoiding contamination of the bath water, and can be operated with ease with one helper person. The bathing apparatus requires less water for a full bath compared with the conventional wheel chair bathing units, because the chair frames are designed to ride on the inside of the bath tub. This configuration is made possible by having a chair frame supported on a single support rod which can be pushed inside the bath tub through a cut-out provided on the bottom section of the tub unit. The support rod emerging from the bottom section into the bath water is sealed by a pair of sealing members which are pressed tightly around the support rod to eliminate leaking of the bath water from the tub unit.

    • A user input system for inputting computer signals, such as a joystick, has an elongated member or handle that is movably received by a housing. The handle is capable of moving in at least three perpendicular directions, i.e., along X, Y and Z axes, and is capable of being rotated about at least one of the three axes. In a first embodiment, a pair of light emitting diodes ("LEDs") are mounted at an end of the handle and oriented toward the interior of the housing. The LEDs are strobed to alternately project light downward into the housing. A light detecting element, such as a two-dimensional position sensing device ("PSD"), two one-dimension PSDs, or a four quadrant photodiode, is positioned opposite the LEDs, and mounted to the housing to receive the light from the LEDs to produce signals. The signals are converted from analog to digital and input to a microprocessor. The microprocessor, employing trigonometric methods, calculates the position and orientation (i.e., rotation) of the handle and outputs the coordinates to a host computer. The joystick preferably includes switches that produce signals and a slidable member that produces a variable signal, all of which are also output to the computer. In a second embodiment, the LEDs are mounted to the housing to project the light upward and the light detecting unit is mounted at the end of the handle.

    • A looming apparatus for a loom includes in general a warp beam handling unit for attaching and removing a warp beam to and from the loom, and a handling unit for supporting loom components including at least heddles and a reed threaded by the warp from the warp beam. A supporting platform is provided on a truck so as to be reciprocated between a stand-by position and a looming position. The warp beam handling unit and the handling unit for supporting the components threaded by the warp yarn are installed on this supporting platform. In the working position of the truck for the loom, the supporting platform is expanded from the truck to the looming position on the loom for performing the required operation at this position. After termination of such operation, the supporting platform is returned to the stand-by position on the truck, while the truck is moved to the looming preparatory position.
