    • A reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexer (ROADM) includes local interfaces at which optical signals of different wavelengths are locally input into the ROADM, and a network interface configured to connect the ROADM to a network from which multiplexed optical signals of different wavelengths are transmitted to the network. In a first configuration, the ROADM is configured to transmit from the network interface to the network multiplexed signals of different wavelengths having a first minimum frequency difference. In a second configuration, the ROADM is configured to transmit from the network interface to the network multiplexed signals of different wavelengths having a second minimum frequency difference. The second minimum frequency difference is greater than the first minimum frequency difference. This arrangement reduces the power of four wave mixing cross products produced when optical signals of three wavelengths are multiplexed and transmitted from the ROADM to NZDSF or DSF fiber types.

    • A multi-point communications system that comprises a head end unit disposed at a primary site and a plurality of receivers disposed at remote sites. The head end unit includes a transmitter for transmitting OFDM/DMT symbols over a predetermined number of bins across a transmission medium. The OFDM/DMT symbols are transmitted in periodically occurring formatted symbol frames. The cyclic prefix includes a predetermined periodic signal superimposed thereon. The receivers receive the OFDM/DMT symbols over a subset of the predetermined number of bins from the transmission medium and use the superimposed signals to attain symbol alignment. In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention, the receivers apply a predetermined incremental phase shift to received samples corresponding to the received OFDM/DMT symbols to thereby compensate for phase shifts. The multi-point communications system may include a similar system for aligning symbols transmissions from a remote service unit having a transmitter. Such a system includes a plurality of remote service units each including a transmitter for transmitting OFDM/DMT symbols over a predetermined number of bins across a transmission medium. Each of the plurality of remote service units is operable in a symbol alignment mode in which the transmitter transmits a broad band periodic signal. The head end unit includes a receiver for receiving the OFDM/DMT symbols, including the broad band periodic signal, from the transmission medium. The head end unit uses the time position of the broad band periodic signal to align the symbol transmissions of the remote service unit.

    • A multi-point communications system is set forth herein. The communications system includes a receiver and transmitter disposed at a primary site for communication with a plurality of remote service units disposed at respective secondary sites. The receiver of the primary site receives OFDM/DMT signals over a number of transmission bins. A transmitter at the remote service unit includes an improved transmitter architecture. The transmitter comprises a first circuit for converting a signal into a first serial digital data stream and a second circuit for generating a second serial digital data stream from the first serial digital data stream of the first means. The second serial digital data stream is a digital representation of an OFDM/DMT signal that is to be transmitted to the receiver of the primary site and is generated from the first serial digital data stream through a modulated direct digital synthesis thereof. A third circuit is used to convert the second serial digital data stream into an analog OFDM/DMT signal for transmission to the receiver of the primary site.

    • An AC gas discharge display panel is described which employs the phenomenon of plasma spreading. In the panel, plasma spreading or "coupling" is employed to couple the plasma to an addressed cell to one of a plurality of pixels to be illuminated. The spreading is controlled by assuring that the cell wall voltages are properly related so that the plasma's electrons migrate to a region where the voltages are approximately equal to or more positive than the wall voltages where the plasma originated. Paired sustain electrodes are selectively energized to enable diversion of the coupled plasma to the desired pixel, so that upon subsequent applications of a sustain voltage, the desired pixel is illuminated (or erased) as the case may be.
