    • This invention relates to a method and arrangement for controlling transmission power in a mobile communications system, and to a network element. In the method according to the invention a certain target level is defined for a value representing the quality of a signal, which target level should be reached by the received signal. According to the invention this target level is advantageously limited so as to be smaller than or equal to a first predetermined limit value and/or greater than or equal to a second predetermined limit value. In accordance with the invention the quality of the signal may be measured e.g. by means of an SIR value. In the method according to the invention the quality of the received signal is checked and, based on the check, a first SIR target level is given to a comparing element (21). By means of the comparing element (21) it is ensured that the said first SIR target level falls within predetermined limits. Based on the comparison, a final SIR target level is given to a power control element (12) which produces a power control signal in order to adjust the transmission power.

    • According to the proposed method, the frequency of power control commands transmitted on a power control channel is changed according to the traffic. When the traffic becomes slower in at least one direction due to a DTX state, a slower transfer rate, asymmetric data transfer or for any other reason, the frequency of power control commands is lowered. Both the base station and the personal station may lower the frequency of the commands which they send. An alternative to changing the frequency of power control commands is to change the energy of power control bits. The duration of power control bits must hereby be extended, if a standard bit error ration is desired. If the system is frequency-divided and/or time-divided and uses frequency control command of several bits, the length of the command word may be shortened in addition to or as an alternative to the change in frequency. The power control algorithm may be changed several times during a traffic connection.

    • A CDMA system transmits from a base station to a plurality of mobile stations or from mobile station to base station on a shared frequency band, each mobile station's data being spread by a different spreading code chosen from a set of orthogonal codes. Each receiver in base station or mobile station correlates for its intended data by despreading the signal using its particular one of the orthogonal codes. Under certain transmission delays, the effects of orthogonality may diminish and another mobile station's signal may cross-correlate with a mobile station's signal. If not all of the orthogonal codes are in use, the present invention determines another selection of orthogonal codes that yields lower cross-correlation under current delay conditions.

    • The invention relates to a radio system and a method of timing an interfrequency handover in a WCDMA cellular radio system where data transmission between a terminal equipment and a base station employs several adjacent alternative frequency bands, and which comprises several different base stations the coverage areas of which overlap at least partly, the base stations utilizing frequency band groups that differ from one another and that are situated next to one another in the frequency range, in which system a terminal equipment communicates with a first base station on a first frequency band and measures the strength of a first signal it has received from the base station, and wherein the terminal equipment measures the strength of a second signal transmitted by a second base station on a second, adjacent frequency band. In order to perform a handover at a correct moment, the terminal equipment compares the measurement results of the first and the second signal, and if the second signal exceeds the first signal by a given threshold value, the terminal equipment signals a handover request to the first base station.
