    • The invention relates to a plate element for a plate cooler, comprising an outer border (8a), running at least partly around the plate element and lying substantially in one plane, the outer border (8a) forming an upper termination of a peripheral side wall (8), a base (1), lying in a bottom plane, with a plurality of openings (2, 3) for allowing a medium to pass through, at least one first opening (2, 3), formed as an aperture in the base, and at least one second opening (4, 5), an opening rim (4a, 5a) of the second opening running in a plane which is parallel to the bottom plane and is offset in a vertical direction with respect to the bottom plane. A plate element is created according to the invention by the second border delimiting at least certain portions of a support area (6, 7) which is substantially parallel to the bottom plane (1), the support area (6, 7) running at least from the second opening (4, 5) to the side wall (8) and being offset with respect to the base in a vertical direction in relation to the bottom plane.

    • Instrumentation and methods are provided for upper jaw correction surgery. The application discloses an orthopedic system and method that can be used to perform both a first distraction (for example a maxillary distraction) and a second distraction (for example a maxillary expansion) within the same surgical procedure. The instrumentation for separating first and second bone segments can include a first footplate; a second footplate; an actuator arranged to vary a distance between the first and second footplates; and a hinge that rotatably attaches the first and second footplates such that the first and second footplates can be angularly adjusted relative to each other about a pivot axis. Additionally, instrumentation and methods are provided for a hinged fixation device capable of securing and adjusting both the linear separation and angular orientation of bone structures.

    • A method of bone fixation comprises the steps of implanting at least one first fixation element into a respective first anatomical body such that a portion of the first fixation element extends out from an exterior surface of the first anatomical body, and implanting at least one second fixation element into a respective second anatomical body that is adjacent the first anatomical body, such that a portion of the second fixation element extends out from an exterior surface of the second anatomical body. A hardenable material is applied to the portion of each of the fixation elements that extends out from the exterior surface of the respective anatomical body when the hardenable material is in an unhardened state. The hardenable material is hardened such that the hardenable material forms a hardened construct together with the bone fixation elements that bridges the anatomical bodies.
