    • A torch for use in welding has a first embodiment for gas metal arc welding and a second embodiment used for hot wire gas-tungsten arc welding. Both embodiments include a torch housing having a first and second end. A wire guide tube is centrally disposed within the housing. An upper electrode contact tip, a lower electrode contact tip and a dielectric material disposed therebetween are positioned at one end of the wire guide tube. An inner power cooling assembly comprises a first cylindrical member concentrically disposed about the wire guide tube and provides electric power to the upper electrode contact tip. The inner power cooling assembly defines a first chamber within which cooling water is circulated in contact with the upper electrode contact tip. An outer power cooling assemblycomprises a second cylindrical member and is electrically isolating from the inner power assembly. The second cylindrical member is in electrical communication with the lower electrode contact tip and defines therewithin a second chamber within which cooling water is circulated. In the gas metal arc welding configuration, a gas supply assembly is included in the torch housing and comprises an outer gas tube circumferentially disposed about the second cylindrical member.

    • The present invention is directed to an improvement for an apparatus which utilizes a preheating step in which the wire heat content of a consumable electrode is increased by means other than the welding current. Thus, the invention provides in combination with at least a first source of electrical power for heating a consumable electrode, a first electrode contact tip having a bore therethrough, a second electrode contact tip having a bore therethrough and a dielectric element having a bore therethrough disposed between the first and second electrode contact tips. The bores are adapted to receive therethrough the consumable electrode for the application of electrical power thereto. The bore of at least one of the electrode contact tips is axially displaced relative to the electrode contact bore of the other electrode contact tip. The invention provides several embodiments whereby either one of the electrode tip bores or the bores of both electrode contact tips are axially displaced. By axially displacing at least one of the bores of the electrode contact tips, electric contact consistency between the consumable electrode and the electrode contact tips is maximized.

    • An improved system (50) for shielding a circumferential region about elongate workpieces from air contamination during welding or heat treatment includes a pair of generally cylindrical shields (52, 54) which define central openings for receiving the workpieces, and which are positioned in longitudinally spaced apart relationship about the joint or region to be welded or heat treated. The shields (52, 54) are of symmetrical but otherwise identical construction. For example, the shield (52) includes a first annular chamber (70) and associated annular diffuser positioned adjacent the process zone, and a second annular chamber (86) and associated cylindrical diffuser (90) extending away from the zone. The chambers (70, 86) are connected to independent sources of inert gas, which flows both into and out away from the process zone to eliminate air contamination from aspiration and the like. A slotted sleeve (98) is preferably provided over the shields (52, 54) to substantially enclose the circumferential region therebetween.
