    • The present invention provides a method, system, and program product for composing a virtualized computing environment. Specifically, under the present invention, data and a definition file that contains application runtime requirements for the data are stored on a portable memory device. Application runtime requirements can be anything related to an environment in which the data was previously used. When the portable memory device is received in a computerized device, an auto-insert script can be executed that signals a provisioning system and/or transports the definition file to the provisioning system. The provisioning system will then interpret the definition file on the computerized device to retrieve the application runtime requirements. Then, the virtualized computing environment will be composed by adapting an environment of the computerized device according to the application runtime requirements retrieved from the definition file.

    • A method and system for constructing rule-based intelligent agents that process events on behalf of one or more users. The intelligent agents have event-generating modules that supply events to be processed, and event-processing modules that process the events by evaluating rules. Each event-processing module of the agent includes multiple sets of rules, one or more such sets for each user of the agent. A selection key related to the user is associated with a rule set, and for event-generating modules a selection key indicates the user on whose behalf the event was generated. When the event-processing module receives an event with a selection key, the module locates and evaluates the rule set(s) which have a matching key to launch the corresponding actions. Addition, replacement or removal of rule sets for a user is made by temporarily suspending the initiation of new events for the user designated by the rule set's selection key; completing all in-progress events for that user; effecting the modification to the rule set within the event-processing modules; and the resuming the initiation and processing of events for the user. While the rule sets are being modified for a particular user, event generating and processing continues unimpeded for the other users of the agent.

    • A computer system for processing and committing data comprises a processor, an external storage device such as DASD or tape coupled to the processor, and a working memory such as RAM. An application program updates data in the working memory and then requests that the data be committed, i.e. written to the external storage device. In response, an operating system function determines which data or blocks have been changed and supplies to an I/O service an identification of the changed data or blocks to cause the I/O service to write the changed data or blocks to the external storage device. Thus, the application program is not burdened with the management of the I/O. The operating system permits the program to continue with other processing while the data is being written from the working memory to the external storage device. As a result, the program need not wait while the data is written to the external storage. Also, because little time is required of the program in the commit process, the program can frequently request commits. With frequent commits, there is less chance that the data will have been written to back-up memory or back-up storage (due to an overload of the working memory) between commits, and as a result, time will not be required to read the data from the back-up memory or storage into the working memory en route to the application program's external storage. Also, the frequent commits reduce the chance of overloading the I/O subsystem.
