    • A magnetic recording and/or reproducing apparatus having a plurality of recording/reproducing modes, such as a long-time recording/reproducing mode and a high rate recording/reproducing mode for digital signals, is intended to form an ideal recording pattern for any head configuration. The apparatus includes magnetic heads 2a and 2b having positive/negative azimuth angles and which are opposed to each other by 180°; magnetic heads 3a and 3b having positive azimuth angles and which are opposed to each other by 180°; and magnetic heads 4a and 4b having negative azimuth angles and which are opposed to each other by 180°; wherein recording/reproducing is performed by using the magnetic heads 2a and 2b in a standard recording/reproducing mode; by using the magnetic heads 3a, 3b, 4a and 4b in a high rate recording/reproducing mode; by using the magnetic heads 2b and 3b in a long-time recording/reproducing mode which is twice as long as the standard mode; and by using the magnetic heads 2a and 2b in a long-time recording/reproducing mode which is N times (N; integer being 3 or more) as long as the standard mode.

    • This invention relates to a method and apparatus for processing a color video signal. The processing method separates an input composite color video signal into a luminance signal and chrominance signal, demodulates the separated chrominance signal into color difference signals, stores the separated luminance signal and color difference signals in a memory, reads out the luminance signal and color differnece signals in units of 1-field period from the memory, implements the extension or reduction of the field period length alternately for every certain number of fields in reading out the luminance signal and color difference signals from the memory thereby to fix the phase relation between a residual chrominance signal component in the luminance signal read out of the memory and a chrominance signal produced by modulating the color subcarrier with the color difference signals read out of the memory, implements an intended signal processing for the readout signals, modulates the color subcarrier with processed color difference signals to produce a chrominance signal, and mixes the chrominance signal with processed luminance signal to produce a composite color video signal.

    • A support method for helping the user find a desired program from a collection of recorded television programs easily and quickly, and a recording/reproducing apparatus using this method. The recorded program viewing support system, when recording a television program, records electronic program information on the program, classifies the electronic program information according to predefined program category criteria, and successfully assigns predefined category numbers (recording channels) to the program to be recorded. Before the user views a recorded program, the user specifies the number of the recorded channel. A recorded channel number is allocated with a category item and hence the user can easily know the contents of the recorded programs. The user can change the channel number successively or directly specify it by using a remote controller to find a desired program easily and quickly. When disk media such as HDD and DVD-RAM are used as a storage in particular, the recorded programs can be randomly accessed allowing the user to zap through recorded programs.

    • A recording/reproducing apparatus is provided for effecting digital processing to convert an analog video signal into a digital signal without losing character data superimposed over a vertical blanking period of the analog video signal. The recording/reproducing apparatus for converting the analog video signal into the digital signal and recording/reproducing the converted digital signal has a detector which detects character data, which is superimposed over the vertical blanking period of the received analog video signal, at the recording time. A superimposer which encodes the detected character data and superimposes the encoded character data over a digital signal from which the character data was removed, whereby the digital signal with the superimposed character data is recorded on the recording media. There is also a detector which detects first copy guard data superimposed over the vertical blanking period and second copy guard data superimposed over a color burst signal; and an adder which adds the two detected copy guard data to a signal reproduced from the recording media.
