    • There is disclosed a pyrolytic boron nitride container used for a Boat method in which material melt is retained In the container, and a crystal is grown while a temperature gradient is imparted to the material melt. The transmissivity of the pyrolytic boron nitride container with respect to light at a wave number ranging from 3700 cm.sup.-1 to 6500 cm.sup.-1 has a profile such that the transmissivity monotonously changes in the longitudinal direction of the container. The transmissivity profile is produced by imparting a pressure profile during manufacture of the container through deposition of pyrolytic boron nitride, by roughing the outer surface of the container such that the surface roughness has a profile, or by compounding pyrolytic boron nitride with a different material. It becomes possible to facilitate generation of a temperature gradient in material melt within the container and to facilitate control of a temperature profile in the container.

    • An object of the invention is to provide an image scrambling apparatus and an image descrambling apparatus capable of making a communication of secrecy by scrambling a digital image signal as well as variable-length-encoding the digital image signal.A transmitting apparatus 1 DCT-encodes an image signal V2 from an A/D converter 11 by means of a DCT encoder 12, and outputs signals of D1, D2, D3, D4, and the number of zero-runs D5. When it variable-length-encodes the D2 to D5 through a variable-length encoder 13 and outputs V3, it generates a series of PN signals K2 by means of a PN generator 18 on the basis of a PN initial value K1 from a PN initial value generator 17, adds the scalar quantumizing number D1 and K2 to each other by means of an adder 19 and outputs the scrambled D1, and then gives a scrambled image signal V4 through compositing the V3 and the D1.

    • A vibratory gyroscope including a planar elastic vibrator having vibrator piezoelectric material layers formed on both the front and back sides. The vibrator includes a base portion and three parallel elastic pieces extending from the base portion such that the a center elastic piece is located between two side elastic pieces. Electrode layers are formed over the piezoelectric material layers which cause both the side elastic pieces and the center elastic piece to vibrate in a plane, such that the vibrations of the center elastic piece are 180.degree. out-of-phase with the side elastic pieces. When the thus-vibrated vibrator is rotated, the elastic pieces are vibrated in directions parallel to the plane due to the Coriolis force. These deformations are detected as voltage changes across the piezoelectric material layers, and the voltage changes are used to determinate the angular velocity of the vibrator. The outside edges of the side elastic pieces are offset from an outer edge of the base section to prevent twisting stress, thereby allowing more precise vibration detection.
