    • A lead weight or other mass is crimped to the contact button assembly of the arcing rod of a high-voltage alternating-current power fuse thereby increasing the mass of the arcing rod without increasing the diameter of the rod. The increased mass of the arcing rod decreases the velocity with which the arcing rod moves upon fusing of the fusible member thereby decreasing the rate of elongation of the arc drawn between the end of the arcing rod and the stationary ferrule at the other end of the fuse. Under high current conditions, the shorter arc length drawn in the fuse reduces the pressure of the arc-extinguishing gas generated by the arc, thereby reducing the risk that an economically constructed fuse will burst in those situations when the arc is not interrupted at the first current zero. This result is accomplished without adversely affecting operation of the fuse and interruption of the arc at low current levels.

    • A circuit-interrupting device for electrical power distribution and transmission systems is provided having improved handling provisions for removal and installation with respect to conventional mountings. The handling provisions permit the circuit-interrupting device to pivot about the lower hinge of the mounting before the circuit-interrupting device is lifted out of the mounting via a handling tool. This permits the dimensions of the circuit-interrupting device to be greater than conventional circuit-interrupting devices. For example, in a preferred embodiment, the circuit-interrupting device includes exhaust diverter structure which directs exhaust away from the mounting, the exhaust diverter structure extending beyond the maximum dimensions which allow the circuit-interrupting device to be directly lifted out of the mounting hinge, i.e. the exhaust diverter structure interferes with the mounting if the circuit-interrupting device is lifted in a direction out of the mounting. The handling provisions include a handling loop on the circuit-interrupting device that is spaced away from the trunnion of the circuit-interrupting device which is received by the lower hinge of the mounting. The location of the handling loop is selected so as to provide suitable pivoting of the circuit-interrupting device before lifting out of the mounting hinge.

    • An arrangement for associating an electrical device with a mounting is provided that includes cooperating structure to prevent the association of inappropriate electrical devices and mountings. Specifically, cooperating support structures that are provided on the mounting and carried by the electrical device cooperate to provide the supporting of the electrical device within the mounting; the cooperating support structures being dimensioned so as to interfere with and prevent the association and support of an electrical device in a mounting that is inappropriate therefor. In a specific arrangement, either the electrical device or the mounting carries receiving structure with defined openings, and the other of the electrical device or mounting carries interfitting protuberances. The appropriate dimensions of the protuberances and the openings prevent the association of inappropriate combinations of electrical devices and mountings while permitting the association of appropriate combinations of electrical devices and mountings. Each of the protuberances has different predetermined dimensions and the appropriate openings include corresponding dimensions. For example, in a specific configuration, a member or fitting attached to an electrical device includes a right-hand side protuberance that is larger than the left-hand side protuberance, and the appropriate mounting includes correspondingly disposed and dimensioned openings; i.e., the right-hand side opening being larger than the left-hand side opening. In this manner, different supports can be formed for two different electrical devices from identical stampings by bending of the stampings in opposite directions.

    • A pull-ring for an electrical device, such as a high-voltage fuse, which may be placed in a mounting. The pull-ring operates a latch, which is capable of holding the fuse closed in the mounting, only when it is reciprocated. The pull-ring is pivotable independently of its reciprocation without affecting the condition of the latch. Accordingly, when a trunnion on the device is in a hinge of the mounting and a pushing force is applied to the pull-ring with a tool to close the device, the natural decrease in the interior angle between the tool and the device can rotate the pull-ring without preventing the latch from holding the device closed. Further, whether the pushing force or a pulling (opening) force is applied to the pull-ring, the direction of application of the force may be adjusted or may naturally change before, during,or after such force application with affecting the ability of the latch to hold the device closed. The tool may, therefore, be either a non-grasping tool (a "hot stick") or one (a "shotgun stick") capable of grasping the pull-ring. In the latter event, when the tool grasps the pull-ring and the trunnion is out of the hinge, the pull-ring is biased to a pivotal orientation whereat the trunnion is presented for convenient insertion into the hinge upon manipulation of the tool.
