    • The invention concerns a procedure for measurement of the material quantities in coating layers applied upon a base material, by utilizing x-ray radiation. The procedure is particularly suited for use in a paper or cardboard manufacturing process wherein onto a material web in continuous motion are applied by steps one or several coating courses. The radiation source and detector are both placed on one side of the moving web, and the procedure is based on measurement of the fluorescence radiation excited by the primary x-ray radiation obtained from the radiation source in the material underlying the coating layer that is to be measured. The primary and secondary radiation both are thereby compelled to pass through the coating layer under measurement before the arrival of the fluorescence radiation at the detector. The moving web may be equipped with a plurality of consecutive pairs of radiation source and detector, the first pair measuring the fluorescence radiation from the base material before application of the coating layer and the latter measuring the equivalent fluorescence radiation after applying the coating layer, in above-presented manner. It is alternatively possible to use one single radiation source and detector and to measure simultaneously the fluorescence radiation produced both in the coating layer under measurement and in the underlying base material.

    • A method for treating a web of paper or board with a wetting substance or calendering the web prior to the cylinder dryer section of a paper- or boardmaking machine while the solids content of the web is still very low, typically in the range of 10–60%, wherein the web can be conveyed when so desired fully supported from the wire section of the paper- or boardmaking machine up to the winder, while simultaneously utilizing the quality benefits obtained from a controlled reduction of the web moisture content and dewatering of the same. The web is conveyed supported by a transfer belt (9) through at least one web surface treatment apparatus such as a coater station (S1B) or a calender prior to passing the web to the first dryer cylinder group (1) of the paper- or boardmaking machine. One nip (11, 13) supported by a transfer belt (9) is suitable for dewatering simultaneously with the application of a treatment substance to the web. The dewatering nip (11, 13) may be formed between a transfer belt (9) and the wire (2) of the wire section or the felt (14) of the press section.

    • The invention concerns a method for regulation of the moisture profile of a paper or board web in a size press in which the paper or board web (W) is made to run through a nip (N) formed by the rolls (1,2) in the size press. Films (F.sub.1,F.sub.2) of size are applied to the faces (3,4) of the rolls in the size press by means of coating devices (10,20) so that these films (F.sub.1 F.sub.2) of size are transferred onto the paper or board web (W) in the roll nip (N). A size (F.sub.1) of substantially invariable profile is spread onto the face (3) of the first roll in the size press (5), and the profile of the size film (F.sub.2) to be spread onto the face (4) of the second roll is regulated so that the moisture profile of the web (W) at the reel-up can be made substantially invariable. The roll face or coating agent present in the roll face is irradiated with X-ray radiation to fluoresce the marker agent, and the fluoresced radiation emitted by the marker agent contaianed in the roll coating and attenuated by the coating agent, or the fluoresced radiation emitted by the marker contained in the coating agent is measured and converted to a value of thickness of the coating quantity. The invention further concerns an arrangement for carrying out this method.
