    • Systems and techniques for managing the use of industrial-scientific-medical bands for cellular network communication. An apparatus comprises a processing system and a memory storing a set of program instructions. The processing system is configured to cause the apparatus to receive channel information from a UE reporting the control of an industrial-scientific-medical (ISM) band channel by the UE and cause the apparatus to schedule a communication session with the UE over the channel, with the channel being configured and activated as an ISM secondary component carrier (SCC). The apparatus may further request one or more user equipments (UEs) to report their wireless fidelity (WiFi) capability and request user equipments having WiFi capability to compete for the wireless medium and report occupation of the wireless medium in the form of a request to send command, to which the apparatus responds with a clear to send command.

    • Uplink and downlink traffic for a plurality of user equipments UEs in a cell is differentially weighted according to traffic type, and that weighted traffic total is used to select one uplink-downlink configuration for a radio frame from among A>1 possible uplink-downlink configurations. The weighting may use a priority factor or traffic class identifier that corresponds to the traffic type. In one embodiment the configuration selection is autonomous, and may be made to maximize throughput in the cell or to minimize a number of subframes that overlap with neighbor cells. In another embodiment there is a cooperation; one access node selects multiple candidate configurations which its neighbor cells score for their own acceptability and return the score tables to the original access node, who makes the final selection using the neighbors' score tables. Specific examples are in the context of the E-UTRAN/LTE system.

    • Methods, apparatus and computer program products are provided for establishing a time-frequency reference signal pattern configuration in a carrier extension or a carrier segment, such as for cell-specific reference signals (CRS) and/or demodulation reference signals (DM RS). One method includes receiving information regarding a time-frequency reference signal pattern configuration in a carrier extension or carrier segment. The time-frequency reference signal pattern configuration defines a subframe to include a reference signal based upon a time density parameter and defines a resource element to be utilized within the subframe based upon a frequency density parameter. This method also includes receiving reference signals pursuant to the time-frequency reference signal pattern configuration such that reference signals have a coherence time Tcoh with at least one subframe including a reference signal in the CE or CS per Tcoh and a coherence bandwidth Bcoh with at least one resource element containing a reference signal per Bcoh.

    • The exemplary embodiments of this invention provide, in one aspect thereof, a method that includes sending a mode switch command from a network access node to a first node of a pair of nodes operating in a device-to-device (D2D) communication mode. The method further includes receiving at least one acknowledgment of the reception of the mode switch command at the network access node, where the at least one acknowledgment is received from a second node of the pair of nodes. In one embodiment the mode switch command is an explicit mode switch command sent using layer 1 (L1) signaling to a master node of the pair of nodes. In another embodiment the mode switch command is an implicit mode switch command that includes a downlink grant to schedule the first node in the network, where the downlink grant contains a radio network identifier (RNTI) of the first node of the pair of nodes, and where the acknowledgment of the reception of the mode switch command is received from the second node of the pair of nodes and also from the first node of the pair of nodes. The exemplary embodiments also encompass user devices, such as mobile phones, that operate in the D2D mode in conjunction with the network access node.
