The apparatus can include a controller (130) coupled to the fuser assembly, where the controller can be configured to control operations of the apparatus. The apparatus can include a nip width profile generation module (140) coupled to the controller, where the nip width profile generation module can be configured to determine fuser nip width parameters based on media sheet properties and based on fuser assembly properties. The fuser assembly can be adjusted according to the fuser nip width parameters.

    • Systems and methods are described that facilitate reducing temperature droop during an initial portion of a print job by reducing fuser speed to increase fuser-to-paper interaction while fuser heat is absorbed by the paper during a temperature transient. For instance, during a first N pages of a print job, where N is an integer, the paper acts as a heat sink and exerts a thermal load on the fuser roll. To compensate, fuser speed is reduced initially to ensure that a given amount of heat is applied to toner on the pages. Fuser speed is increased until fuser temperature reaches steady state. Acceleration of the fuser is also adjustable.

    • A heated drum assembly improves thermal control of a rotating drum in a printer. The assembly includes a hollow drum, two stationary heaters located within an internal cavity of the drum, one of the two stationary heaters being at one end of the drum and the other stationary heater being at another end of the drum, a fan located at one end of the drum, a temperature sensor at one end of the drum, and a second temperature sensor at the other end of the drum, and a controller electrically coupled to the heaters, the fan, and the two temperature sensors to control a temperature of the wall of the drum to a set point by activating at least one of the heaters in response to a signal indicating a temperature below a first predetermined temperature threshold and operating the fan at one of three speeds.

    • A system that determines an amount of toner mass present on a toner application surface, and comprises a specular reflection sensor, a diffuse reflection sensor, an output combination module, and a mass determination module. The specular reflection sensor receives electromagnetic radiation that has been specularly reflected by the toner application surface, and generates a specular reflection output representative of the received electromagnetic radiation. The diffuse reflection sensor receives electromagnetic radiation that has been diffusely reflected by the toner application surface, and generates a diffuse reflection output representative of the received electromagnetic radiation. The output combination module creates a combined output by combining the specular reflection output and the diffuse reflection output with the purpose of reducing a noise source common to both specular and diffuse outputs to improve the signal to noise ratio. The mass determination module determines an amount of toner mass present on the toner application surface based on the combined output.
