    • A directional horn may include at least one group of a plurality of speakers or audio emitters. The audio emitters may each emit and audio signal at a same frequency. A processor may control a relative phase difference and relative gain difference between each audio signal, based on a determined direction. The directional horn may be positioned on a vehicle. The determined direction may be based on a direction indicated by a driver controlling the vehicle, external environmental factors, vehicle dynamics, or other factors.

    • A pattern matching method for matching a time varying input signal with a number of sequences of time varying reference signals. The method includes a dynamic programming matching process which processes each pattern of the input signal in sequence and which propagates a plurality of dynamic programming paths using predetermined dynamic programming constraints, controlling the matching step by comparing the cumulative value associated with each path with a pruning value thereby to restrict the number of paths that were propagated from a preceding time point, when the preceding input pattern was being processed in the matching step, from being propagated further during the processing of the input pattern at a current time point by the matching step, determining at the current time point, a number of possible paths that will be propagating at the succeeding time point, prior to restriction by the controlling step, when the succeeding input pattern will by processed by the matching step, and altering the pruning value to be used at the succeeding time point in dependence upon the number of possible paths determined by the determining step, counting the number of paths which have been propagated to the succeeding input pattern, wherein the altering step adjusts the value of the variable to be equal to a set maximum value if the variable has been adjusted to be greater than that maximum and adjusts the value of the variable to be equal to a set minimum value if the variable is adjusted to be less than that minimum value.

    • In an apparatus for extracting information from an input speech signal, a preprocessor, a buffer, a segmenter, an acoustic classifier and a feature extractor are provided. The preprocessor generates formant related information for consecutive time frames of the input speech signal. This formant related information is fed into the buffer, which can store signals representative of a plurality of frames. The segmenter monitors the signals representative of the incoming frames and identifies segments in the input speech signal during which variations in the formant related information remain within prespecified limits. The acoustic classifier then determines classification information for each segment identified by the segmenter, based on acoustic classes found in training data. The feature estimator then determines, for each segment, the information required, based on the input speech signal during that segment, training data and the classification information determined by the acoustic classifier.

    • A method for determining the location of a pattern, when input in isolation, within a representative input signal is provided. The method aligns the input signal with a signal representative of a plurality of connected patterns, one of which is the same as the pattern within the input signal. The method then determines the location from the results of the aligning step. The location determined using this apparatus can be used to determine an isolated reference model by extracting features of the input signal from the location found. This isolated reference model can then be used to generate a continuous reference model for the pattern, by aligning the isolated reference model with the signals representative of a plurality of connected patterns, one of which is the pattern to be modelled.
