    • In a color television receiver, color reference oscillations, developed by a VCO under AFPC loop control, are supplied to a variable phase shifter. A phase detector, responsive to the phase shifter output and to the burst component of received color television signals, develops a control voltage indicative of the phase relationship therebetween at its output terminal. Application of the control voltage to a control voltage input terminal of the phase shifter completes a servo control loop for maintaining the phase of the shifter's output in a predetermined relationship with the burst phase. A manual hue control potentiometer has an adjustable tap connected to the phase detector output terminal in such manner that tap adjustment alters voltage at control voltage input terminal while concomitantly altering servo loop gain.

    • Control signal generator is responsive to the output of a pair of correlation indicators. One correlation indicator provides an indication of the presence or absence of correlation between high frequency components derived without difference in delay from the respective luminance and chrominance outputs of a color TV receiver's comb filter system. The other correlation indicator provides an indication of the presence or absence of correlation between high frequency components derived with a difference in delay from the respective comb filter outputs, the delay difference corresponding to a quarter period at the nominal color subcarrier frequency. Control signal is developed in response to a correlation indication by either or both of the indicators. The luminance output of the comb filter is subjected to high frequency component removal during control signal development.

    • In a color TV receiver, a color AFPC loop, responsive to line rate synchronizing bursts of subcarrier frequency derived from the output of a first of a pair of cascaded chrominance signal amplifiers, controls the frequency and phase of an output of a VCO. The VCO output is passed through a variable phase shifter external to the AFPC loop to develop reference oscillations for use by color demodulators. Control of the variable phase shifter is effected by the output of a phase detector which compares the phases of (a) an output of the variable phase shifter and (b) line rate synchronizing bursts derived from an output of the second chrominance signal amplifier.

    • A circuit for linearly controlling the gain of a differential amplifier includes a differentially connected current splitter network biased by means of a symmetrical bias circuit coupled to a common operating potential and including first and second current sources with associated first and second impedances. The current splitter includes a diode exhibiting a non-linear voltage in response to linear current conduction, and a transistor. The bias circuit responds to a variable gain control voltage for causing the diode to conduct current which varies linearly with the gain control voltage. First and second mutually differential control voltages derived from the transistor and diode, including a non-linearly varying voltage exhibited by the diode, are applied to the differential amplifier for controlling the conduction of the differential amplifier linearly with respect to the original control voltage.

    • A controlled oscillator comprises an amplifier including an active device, a filter network arranged in a feedback loop of the amplifier for providing regenerative feedback to sustain oscillation of the amplifier, and a source of control signals. Output oscillatory signals from the amplifier and output control signals from the control source are summed by a combining network to produce a resultant controlled signal, which is coupled to the filter network. Parasitic capacitances associated with output terminals of the amplifier and control source impart an unwanted phase shift to the controlled signal. A compensation signal derived from the oscillator is supplied to the combining network with a magnitude and phase to offset the unwanted phase shift, to thereby produce a phase compensated resultant controlled signal.

    • A sample and hold detector arrangement suitable for construction in integrated circuit form as an automatic chroma gain control detector, or a color oscillator AFPC detector, or the like. A wide bandwidth analog multiplier circuit is supplied with an intermittent reference signal and a second signal, the phase or amplitude of which is to be sampled. In a preferred embodiment, the reference signal corresponds to the burst component of a composite color television signal and the second signal corresponds to a locally generated color subcarrier signal. The multiplier provides oppositely phased output signals which are coupled to first and second sample and hold circuits. Each sample and hold circuit is keyed to concurrently sample the respective multiplier outputs for the same sampling interval, and each provides substantially symmetrical bidirectional conduction to associated filter capacitors during the sampling interval and a high holding impedance during the remainder of each cycle.

    • Brightness control apparatus for a video signal image reproducing system including a video signal processing channel, a source of reference voltage for establishing a desired level of image brightness, and a keyed comparator circuit. The comparator forms a closed control loop with the signal processing channel, and is keyed during periodic blanking intervals of the video signal to sense the magnitude of the reference voltage and a brightness representative blanking level of the video signal which may vary undesirably. The comparator provides an output control signal indicative of a voltage difference between the reference voltage and the blanking level. The control voltage is applied to the signal channel for translating the blanking level in a direction to minimize the voltage difference, so that a desired relationship between the reference voltage and the blanking level is preserved.
