Some embodiments include estimating (101) a speed at which a mobile device is moving, determining (102) relative scanning priorities for different carrier frequencies based upon the estimated speed of the mobile device, and sending (103) an indication of the relative scanning priorities for the different carrier frequencies to the mobile device. By determining carrier frequency scanning priorities based upon the estimated speed of a mobile, throughput can be improved over that attained by present-day carrier frequency selection techniques.

    • Disclosed is a method of signaling hopping locations selected by a scheduling entity using a frequency hopping pattern indicator for indicating hopping locations for at least two re-transmissions. The frequency hopping pattern is selected by the scheduling entity which may have knowledge of all or at least a plurality of scheduled reverse link transmissions or restrictions upon reverse link transmissions, thereby allowing reverse link re-transmissions to be scheduled in a manner compatible with other reverse link transmissions and restrictions. Overall signaling overhead associated with scheduling re-transmissions is reduced through the signaling of a single message which indicates hopping locations for at least two re-transmissions instead of two or more separate messages, wherein each of the two or more separate message indicates a hopping location for an individual re-transmission.

    • A method of resource allocation in which resources may be allocated to a mobile station or other transmitting entity for transmitting an initial data packet based on a preamble which indicates a data type to be transmitted by the mobile station. Based on the indicated data type, a determination is made as to whether resources should be allocated for transmission of the initial data packet. If it is determined such resources should be allocated, the mobile station can send the initial data packet before receiving a scheduling grant, thereby expediting transmission of the initial data packet and reducing initial latency.

    • To address the need for new techniques that enable the identification of errant channel reporting devices, various embodiments are described. In some embodiments, a network node receives (201, 401) channel quality indicators (CQI) from user equipment (UE) via a connection and determines (202, 402) whether the CQI are erroneous. In response to determining that the CQI are erroneous, the network node records (203) a timestamp and a connection identifier corresponding to the connection between the UE and the network node. In other embodiments, the network node, in response to determining that the CQI are erroneous, records (403) a device hardware identifier for the UE. In the various embodiments, information is recorded and/or obtained and distributed in a manner that enables the identification of errant channel reporting devices within a communication system.

    • Disclosed is a method of allocating resources in a packet data system to a User Equipment (UE) with an active data session, such as a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) call, using dedicated resources to transmit scheduling requests, thereby reducing latency which may occur as a result of collisions associated with transmitting scheduling requests over a random access channel. The method comprises the step of transmitting over dedicated resources a scheduling request, and receiving a scheduling grant in response thereto. The scheduling request indicates that a transmitter in a data session has a data packet to transmit. The scheduling grant indicates resources allocated for transmitting the data packet.
