    • An electronic musical instrument comprises: a keyboard circuit for generating a pitch data signal which designates the note name of a musical tone to be produced; a speech signal generator for generating a speech signal which tells in human voice the name of the designated musical tone; multiplexed processing circuit for time-divisionally processing the pitch data signal and the speech signal; and sound signal producing circuit for producing the musical tone and the human voice in accordance with the processed output from the multipled processing circuit. Thus the instrument speaks the names of the tones as it produces the musical tones.

    • A mask portion is provided at a partial area of an intake port at a side opposite to an exhaust port. The mask portion prevents a part of the intake port from being opened when the intake valve is in a low lift state. A top surface of a piston includes a smooth surface. An ECU sets the maximum lift of the intake valve for a variable valve mechanism to an intermediate lift and sets a fuel injection timing for an injector to a compression stroke when an operating range of the engine is a fast idle range. The intermediate lift is an amount of lift at which the intake valve is moved beyond the mask portion and a flow rate of intake air in the partial area is limited relative to a flow rate of the intake air in other areas owing to the mask portion.

    • A VCO has n inverters connected to each other in a ring, wherein the inverters have a depletion-mode FET. A selector control circuit produces a select signal based upon a threshold voltage of a selector depletion-mode FET to select one of an output derived from a (n−i)-th inverter, or another output signal derived from the n-th inverter. Because the selector FET and the inverter FETs are made using the same process steps and thus have the same device parameters, the selector FET has the same threshold voltage variation as the inverter FETs. Based upon the variation in the FET threshold voltage, the selected output is provided to an input of a first inverter. The VCO operates at a constant frequency by changing the total number of inverters in the ring to compensate for the variation in the threshold voltage of the depletion-mode FETs in the inverters, as determined by the depletion-mode FET in the selector circuit.
